How to Get Away

First things first. Do you need to leave?

That is a decision you can only make your self. However these are some of the reasons you may have to.

1. Physical abuse.
2. Mental abuse.
3. Child abuse.
4. Alcohol or drug abuse.

So you have made up your mind what is the next step?

don’t wait!
do it now!

If you can get some documents together.

1. The only thing you really must take with you is any reference to you NI number.
2. Benefit books. (the ones with your name on)
3. Birth certificates.
4. Medical cards.
5. Marriage certificate.
6. Personal bank details (not the joint acc see chapter 3.)

Other useful things to take with you are.

· Money.
· 1 or 2 sets of clean clothes.
· Medication (including the pill)
· Your book of phone numbers.
· Your precious photos.

So you have left. What are you to do now?

The first people to contact are :-

· The Police. (Tell them why you have left and that you are not ‘missing’)
· The Woman’s help line. (between 10am and 2pm)
· Social Services.

The social services will be able to give help and advice with money and accommodation.
The police will come and get you from wherever you are and find you a refuge.
The woman’s help line will find you a refuge but you will be required to get there yourself.
If you travel on public transport keep your tickets as you can be reimbursed for this expense.
