The Worm
I sit on the broad green leaf
That is my life.
Great fat white worm
That I am.
Barely able to move from
side to side
top to bottom
As the sun moves through the day,
Hardely able to breathe
As I eat.
Watching other caterpillars
sleak, trim, colorful
Rushing past me
To their parties with their friends.
Oh, I've climbed out a few twigs
in my day.
Always thought I'd make it
to the top of a tree.
I've tasted many leaves
Some better, some worse.
But this is the leaf I have now
and I can't make it anywhere else.
I've laid my eggs
and swelled with love
as I watched them hatch.
And I've felt the the bird's
Sharp beak
taking bites out of my hopes
and Dreams.
Felt the rain of tears
and the sunshine of joy.
Knowing always
that I must die
For the butterfly of my soul
To fly free.
