The Lord permitted me to go see "One Night With The King". I have been looking forward to this movie for years - as soon as I heard they were making a movie based on Tommy Tenney's book, "Hadassah: One Night With The King" I prayed that they would do justice unto God with their adaptation. The Lord had me sow seed into this film; He also allowed me to go to a meeting last year where Tommy & Jeannie Tenney were speaking, and they gave me a free DVD of Jeannie singing "One Night With The King" as they showed scenes from the upcoming movie - THAT was awesome and edited well with lovely images against an anointed theme song...thus my anticipation grew.
Coming in at number 9, box office sales were $4.3 million; ticket sales were low-to-moderate. When I went to see it there were FOUR OF US in the entire theater.
I will say that I was disappointed with this film. While there ARE some stunning moments that will make you cry (those scenes that personify the bride and the Bridegroom) there were so many difficult scenes...it was if they were trying to just stuff as much historical info everywhere yet the scenes were choppy and some meanings, obscure.
Tommy Tenney said via email/letters, etc that he was hoping to 'sneak' the message of God in this film. There WAS the faith of the main character, however the story didn't make much sense (and I don't mean in the sense that His ways our higher than our ways, His thoughts higher than ours)...I would like the opportunity (if the Lord permits) to see it again a second time to see if that makes a difference. However if the point was to draw unbelievers to God, sometimes you don't get a second chance. The Lord had me study Esther IN DEPTH a few years ago for a long period of time and yet there were scenes in this movie that even I didn't understand. If it takes the biblicly learned scholar to understand a film (especially the background information scenes) HOW IS A NON-CHRISTIAN going to then SEE GOD much less UNDERSTAND THE STORY ITSELF?
Let me also say that the cinematography/all things visual were OUTSTANDING in epic proportions. The acting was outstanding as well. The problem was the STORY ITSELF.
VERY disappointing - especially since the book was SO AWESOME There had to be a better way to write this screenplay that flowed...even some of Esther's memory flashback scenes only made sense if you'd read the book...
THAT'S WHY WE MUST LISTEN TO GOD'S SPIRIT ALL THE TIME IN ALL THINGS. The book was HIGHLY ANOINTED yet the screenplay wasn't - for if Holy Spirit had written this movie, it would have flowed beautifully and the anointing would have been powerful.
Saddly, it didn't and wasn't.
I tell you truthfully - if you get a chance to own a copy of the movie trailer with Tommy's wife singing "One Night With The King"...THAT will bless you greatly!
Also, the book was AWESOME!!! - if you have not yet read it, you should ask the Lord if He would permit you to do so!
The most exciting part of going to see this film turned out to be the pre-movie previews (of movies to come) - there is a movie coming out in December called "The Nativity Story" that was ANOINTED!!!
