SONG OF HIS HEART:
SONG OF SOLOMON

I greet you in the matchless name of Jesus to this wonderful study on the Song
of Solomon. There are very few truly deep studies on this book, but the Lord
has shown this one to me, and I am to share it with you. It is adapted by a local
brother in Christ from Mike Bickel's teachings on the same subject. Mike doesn't
concern himself with copyrights because he truly knows that all that he has
to share is breathed from God...thus who owns it BUT Almighty God. I am sure
this brother feels the same way as well. The Lord also wants me to add that
you might want to invite him to come and teach on this very subject. For the
Lord has truly put the Song of Songs upon his Spirit and he speaks forth
truths that can only be uttered by someone who has spent much time at the
Master's feet, quietly listening, hungering for the deep things of Almighty God.

Divine Patterns in the Song of Solomon

INTRODUCTION: As you read through the Song of Solomon you see similar phrases
and concepts repeated two or more times. If you take the time to study the context
around these pairs or sets of passages, marvelous principles are revealed.
We will look at some of them.

Two main divisions:

1. Jesus is our inheritance: Chapters 1 through 4
2. We are Jesus’ inheritance: Chapters 5 through 8
The dividing point is in 4:16 when she
goes from saying "my garden" to "His garden"

Her progressive characterizations to her relationship to the Bridegroom:

1. Song 1:14 My beloved is to me…..
2. Song 2:16 My beloved is mine, and I am his.
3. Song 6:3 I am my beloved’s, And my beloved is mine….
4. Song 7:10 I am my beloved’s, And his desire is toward me.
(She is progressively becoming more abandoned to Him).

The "Apple Tree":
Song 2:3; Song 8:5
(awakening)

The Bridegroom always comes to her with one or more of the following:
Affirmation, Invitation, Revelation
(see Song 2:8, 10 for an example of all three)

References to her neck:
Song 1:10; Song 4:4; Song 4:9; Song 7:4
(willingness to submit to Him)

"Let me hear your voice":
Song 2:14; Song 8:13
(Intimacy in the midst of service)

"Who is this….?":
Song 3:6-7
(He is revealed as a "Safe God");
Song 8:5
(she’s leaning on her "Safe God")

"I charge you O daughters of Jerusalem…":
Song 2:7
(she learns He is her inheritance);
Song 3:5
(she learns disobedience brings chastisement but repentance brings restoration);
Song 8:4
(learns to balance service and intimacy)

Revelations of new faces of the Bridegroom:

The Gentle Shepherd:
Song 1:8;
The Affectionate Father:
Song 1:12;
The Sovereign King:
Song 2:8-9;
The Safe Savior:
Song 3:6-8;
The Affectionate Bridegroom:
Song 4:9-10;
The Suffering Servant:
Song 5:2;
The Majestic God:
Song 5:10-16;
The Consuming Fire:
Song 8:6-7

The bride in relation to the dawn:
Song 2:17
(darkness in her heart causes her to send him away till she gets more light);
Song 4:6
(she embraces the cross in intercession to deal with the darkness);
Song 6:10
(no longer waiting for the dawn; the cross has done
its work in her heart, she IS the dawn)

Myrrh refers to the death of Jesus and his work on the cross;
and our taking up our cross and following Him:

Song 1:13; Song 3:6-7; Song 4:6; Song 4:12-14;
Song 5:1; Song 5:5; Song 5:13.

Spices: the progression of its use:

1. The inner life of individuals: Song 4:16. She speaks of her own inner life as
"my garden" and of the fragrance of its spices flowing out of Him for His enjoyment.
2. Local churches: Song 6:2 "beds of spices" in the plural would refer to the
collective churches in the world; the world-wide church –by implication a "bed of spices"
in the singular would refer to one particular local body of Christ.
3. The church world-wide: Song 6:2 "beds of spices" in the plural would refer
to the collective churches in the world, the world-wide church.
4. The New Jerusalem: Song 8:14 "the mountains of spices"

Love better than wine:
Song 1:2 (the bride to the Bridegroom);
Song 4:10 (The Bridegroom to the bride)

Progressive concern, love and service to the body of Christ
· Song 1:7-8:
He instructs her to become part of a local church
· Song 2:16:
Her relationship with Him has escalated as she comes into the experience of being
fed with the rest of the flock in the corporate gatherings of the church
· Song 3:11:
She exhorts others to see Him as He has shown Himself to her
· Song 6:1
She awakens others to a fervent pursuit of Him together with her
· Song 6:2:
She realizes that He can be found in the midst of His church (garden)
· Song 6:11-12:
Her interest and zeal for ministering to the church intensifies
as she takes on His passion for His church
· Song 7:9b:
As she does His will in the church, the sleeping ones are awakened
· 7:11ff:
She now takes the initiative to rise up and go forth to
tend to the budding virtues in the immature church
· Song 8:2:
She desires to take back the church where she first met Him, her understanding of Him
as He has revealed Himself to her at later stages in her maturity
· Song 8:13:
The Bridegroom extols her as "you who dwell in the gardens"; she has now
dedicated herself to fully committing to serving the church. He commends her highly
for it but wants her not to get too busy for intimacy with Him
· Song 8:14:
She intercedes for the hastening of the day when the whole church
of all the ages will be united with Him forever

The withdrawal of the manifest presence of God:

Song 2:17 - 3:1 (chastisement);
Song 5 & 6 (testing)

He proclaims that she is "fair" ("beautiful"):
Song 1:8, 15, 16; Song 2:10, 13, 14;
Song 4:1, 7, 10; Song 7:1, 6

CONCULSION: There are great insights and blessing to be gained by meditating on these
divine patterns in the Song of Solomon. Master them. Make your own cross-reference
system in the margins of your Bible to link the pairs and sets of passages together.

Who Is Speaking?

We are usually not told who is speaking at any given time.
If you have speaker assignments in your Bible they have
been supplied by the editor/publisher and were not part of
the Song of Solomon as it came down to us. There are
indicators in the text: by the gender oriented pronouns
used; by words of endearment used predominantly by either
the Bridegroom or the bride for the other. There are some
pronouns that were indefinite in the Hebrew (such as in
2:7, the pronoun in the phrase, "….until it pleases…", NKJV.
The "it" could be "he" or "she". How it’s translated is
according to the understanding of the context by the translator).

These are the speaking assignments as I have understood them.
