Luckily, I've gotten Liz hooked on sushi, despite her reaction the first time we went to my favorite sushi bar, Sono Sushi in Mountain View. We sat at the bar with the revolving boats where she tried to look at anything BUT the dead fish floating by. Except for 2 Cokes, she didn't have anything that night. When I told her they made vegetarian sushi, she perked up and bravely tried again, venturing into the land of seaweed, inari, kappa maki, california rolls, chicken teriyaki rolls and aparagus rolls. She now readily suggests we sushi...an offer I can't refuse!
Sono Sushi is my favorite sushi bar but I'll venture out to compare. You never know when you're stuck far away from your bar! We go to Satsumi on El Camino in Sunnyvale. It's between the Baskin Robbins and Lucky's. I was initially suspicious because it didn't look like they had many customers but I was pleasantly surprised. Another place is Yakko's in Mountain View. It's cute and Liz likes their vegetarian sushi combos.
Since we've moved further south to Sunnyvale, we hardly get a chance to make it to any of the aforementioned sushi places. Luckily, Kim introduced us to Kobe's, my new favorite place. They boast a huge sushi boat and a large banquet room in addition to the large restaurant area. Their San Jose Shark roll is my favorite. Here's a great link to John Maraist's sushi restaurant search engine. Site visitors can add their comments on a particular restaurant they've been to...a terrific resource for those that've never been or are looking for recommendations. For Bay Area residents, go to his CA sushi compilation...excellent job, John!
On Nov 23rd, 1997, we enjoyed 3 1/2 hours of taiko drumming at the 29th Annual International Taiko Festival, with wonderful performances by the San Francisco Taiko Dojo, Los Angeles Matsuri Taiko, Sacramento Taiko Dan, and the San Francisco Taiko Dojo, SFTD Rising Stars Dream Team and several guest stars from Japan. I was surprised that the San Jose Taiko weren't there. It must've been an oversight. If you like drumming, then you'll love taiko. Leave it to the Japanese to turn drumming into an art! Inspirational and full of excitement, this is something to be experienced live. No recording can do taiko drumming justice. The .gif to the left leads you to the Taiko Spirit web page. This group is made up of former students from the SF Taiko Dojo so they have to be good! Their site is very informative...they even provide directions in case you want to make your own taiko drum! |
My favorite Sanrio character is Pochacco, the Cool K-9! He's the cutest of the bunch with the coolest attitude. For his biography, be sure to click on his .gif!
Guess where we're going??? The Sumo Basho in Vancouver, Canada!!! Woohoo!!! I'll finally get to see the sumo ceremonies and matches I've only read about for my research paper...and take a vacation, of course! =)
