It is very lonesome in this office. I expected a letter from |
Manda but it did not come. I will feel better when it comes. |

Took Walter to the hospital as he had the measles. Hated to |
do it, but could not keep him here any longer. Always trouble |
where ever we go. |
Sunday, May 17, 1903 |
Bro. Joe got back from the timber and stayed until Monday |
night we had a good visit. It had been a long time since we |
had been together. |
Friday, May 22, 1903 |
Saw President Roosevelt today the first President I ever saw. |
Also the largest crowd. |
Saturday, May 23, 1903 |
Mr. Hawthorne & I went to West Fork Oregon to cruise for |
timber claims. Traveled all night and stopped at Roseberg all |
day. Saw Anthony Lemay there. Went on to West Fork that |
evening. |
Wednesday, May 27, 1903 |
Mr. Hawthorne went back to Portland and left me to work |
alone. Very lonesome alone in these hills. |
Saturday, May 30, 1903 |
Packed my tent and blankets & grub out seven (7) miles a |
hard trip and awful hot. Lots of big hills to climb. |
Sunday, May 31, 1903 |
Camped alone last night for the first time in my life. It was |
awful lonely and cold. Had only one blanket. Kept a fire all |
night. I wished I was back with Manda and the children. I |
think I would have sense enough to stay with them. |
