Mother & Mr. David Shatto were married at Souk Rapids, |
Minn. in the evening at the residence of Mrs. Hamilton by |
Justice of the Peace Abbot Laughton. |

We moved to Mr. Shatto's place in sec. 14 town of Maywood, |
Benton Co. . 4 miles back from the school settlement. Found |
a crew of railroad surveyors camped in the yard when we got |
there. It had rained all day and as we traveled with ox teams |
and were heavy loaded; the roads merely trails through dense |
forests and full of mud and we had trouble fording the St. |
Francis River. It took us all day to go six miles and the family |
was wet and cold when we arrived at what was to be our |
home for many years. |

I was 15 years old. The R. R. ?? was completed between St. |
Cloud and Hinkley and crossed Mr. Shatto's land. We took |
borders, Mother and the girls took care of them and we men |
went to getting out cord wood and trees. So we were soon |
making money. Much different than the 3 1/2 years Mother |
had put in as a widow trying to keep us clothed and fed. And |
sometimes we had hardly enough of either. |
