One of the biggest changes that the Internet brings to our lives is activism. No more are digruntled groups separated by long distances and poor communications. They can instantly send and receive news about their causes in the blink of an eye.
Money considerations come into play as well. In order to spread news, activists had to spend loads of cash on paper, printing, and distribution. Not any more, now with a free website, activists can spread the word 24/7 to whomever is interested in their cause.
And only those interested in the cause will apply. Every activist who has passed out handbills remembers all those people who tossed them into the garbage without a glance. More money wasted on people on who do not care. Between websites, newgroups, and e-mail lists, activists no longer have to spend time and money seeking out an audience. The audience comes to the activist.
The best example of cyber activism is the Noah's Ark Massacre. Before the age of the 'Net Iowans were secure in knowing that the troubles in their part of the world would not command international attention. The publicity surrounding Noah's Ark was probably the rudest awakening yet to the cyber world. Iowans, even those who live in rural areas, are going to have to give up their isolationist notions and join the rest of us in the information age.
Every cat lover with 'Net access has heard about the Noah's Ark massacre and the injustice done to animals when the offenders were released with a slap on the wrist. And the response was overwelming. Iowa attracted attention from the entire world for this heinous act. Their attempt to sweep it under the rug was noted by the cyber cat community as well.
Like it or not, we are in the information age. Like it or not, activists thrive on information. Like it or not, the Internet makes the dissemination of information almost instataneous. Some say that the 'Net will revolutionize business. That may be so, but the 'Net has already revolutionized activism.
