Ever get tired of "false rape reports" and "false rape accusations" that men's rights activists claim that make up most rape reports? Well, here's something new...

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) -- Detectives searched for two days for Brenda, the mystery woman blamed for severing an ex-convict's penis to avenge the 1983 killing of her friend. Police now say Brenda never existed.
Police learned of the hoax when the maimed man, Alan Hall, volunteered to help create a composite sketch of his attacker. But under questioning, Hall admitted he mutilated himself Dec. 5 with a hobby knife, police said.
``At this point there is no evidence that a crime occurred,'' Lt. William Gresham said late Friday.
At Hall's request, police would not say why he did it.
Hall may face misdemeanor criminal charges of filing a false police report, a decision that rests with Solano County prosecutors. Police said Hall was ``put in touch with appropriate mental health service professionals,'' but would not elaborate.
Hall, 48, was convicted in 1983 of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Denise Denofrio after she apparently joked about his inability to achieve an erection during a one-night stand.
Retired police officer John Mraz, who investigated the slaying, said Hall's feelings of guilt may have been overwhelming. Asked whether the apparent self-mutilation was justice served, Mraz said: ``I don't look at this as revenge. I think it's just sad.''
Hall, a former pipefitter and Vietnam War veteran, was found unconscious on the front lawn of his brother's house Dec. 5.
He told police that he met Brenda at a gas station hours earlier and that they went to his trailer, where they had sex. Sometime about 3 a.m., Hall told police, the woman said something suggesting she was seeking revenge, cut off his penis and fled.
Hall left the area Tuesday, a day after he was released from the hospital. He was not seen until he showed up at police headquarters Thursday.
In 1995, a man who told New York police that a vengeful prostitute cut off his penis admitted he got careless with a knife while making a guitar. Police said the 67-year-old man concocted the story because he was afraid the truth might get him committed to a mental institution.
In 1993, Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husband's penis in Virginia. She claimed years of sexual abuse drove her to the attack, and she was acquitted by reason of insanity. Bobbitt's penis was reattached.
