On Calhoun Lake

We walked in the moonlight, no longer hand in hand.
We had been here before and put our toes in the sand.
Our hand had held each other once and lips touched in a kiss.
From this night on that’s what I would miss.

We talked a lot that night on our walk around the lake.
We became friends instead of lovers for sanity’s sake.
The night was so romantic, the crickets were singing.
I stole a look into your eyes, the tears in mine were stinging.

You were looking up, the moon was full and bright.
Just then a sleeping bird nearby took flight.
We walked on together, my heart torn in pieces
Intellectually knowing that loving him was not right.
Reaching beyond those feelings and emotions
I kept walking with him as a friend that night.

We walked on in the moonlight
Two people alone but together in thought
Lost in a world the other did not know
And a deep friendship would always be our lot.
