The radio played, it played some songs
I sat there listening to you,
The phone rang, it rang loudly
I hadn’t noticed you, your words so few
Our neighbors played their drums, they drummed a beat
I started to see what you meant to me
Out in the hallway, the floorboards creaked
I heard your words, they held no meaning to me
The wind blew, it rustled through the trees
I did not really care, your feelings were fair.
THE LISTENING POST
The television blared, it blared all day long
The blender buzzed, it buzzed real loud
The fridge hummed, but made no real sound
Hadn’t heard what you said
Not one single word
You chatted more than usual today
But what did you say?
I sat and wondered why
And really just wanted to cry.
The doorbell chimed, did we invite a crowd?
The dog barked, but she spoke softly
The bird sang and she sang deftly.
You made noises but just no sense
Or am I just that dense?
I thought I cared but I don’t
And really, I just won’t
Saw the woman at the bus stop take a seat
Outside somewhere a cricket chirped, it chirped a tune
The dog howled, she howled at the moon.
Your noises turned to words and began
To make sense to me and my life again
I realized I did not love you
And you realized that too.
You opened the door, the hinges squeaked
The car drove down the street, the driver honked the horn long
Outside in the street someone sang, they sang a song
There was nothing left of my emotions left to see
Apathy was my new guide to life
Without caring there would be no strife.
And it viciously tore away the remaining leaves
The snow fell, it silently fell to the street below
A program came on TV and I wanted to watch that show.
You helped me see
What it meant, we
I sat there and listened to your car leave
And did not grieve.
