The Pipeline Address
Ten score and 406 days ago, The pipeline brought forth on this continent a new problem, conceived in a control room, and dedicated to the proposition of the almighty dollar.
Now we are engaged in a great civil litigation, testing weather that company, or the insurers, so rich, so stingy, can long endure (the attorneys’ fees). We have yet to meet on the great battlefield of that war. But we dedicate a portion of the that Great River as a final resting place for those creatures who there gave their lives that this pipeline might live. They felt this altogether fitting and proper.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot litigate, we cannot concentrate, we cannot restore this ground. The brave attorney, living and well read who work here have litigated it far above the clients poor power to add or detract (charges). The people will largely note, and attempt not to forget what we do there. It is for us, the legal people, rather, to be dedicated to the unfinished work which they who spilled could care less. It is rather for us to be so dedicated to the great task remaining before us.
