Charity Name: Circle of Children | Attention: Melvina Winter or Lucille Weasel Bear Address: (Winter) 100 Main St., Pine Ridge, SD 57770 (Bear) 80 Main St., Pine Ridge, SD 57770 Description: Circle of Children is a fabulous sponsorship program on a Lakota Indian reservation, in which sponsors commit to a relationship with a child until s/he turns 18. We send a card once a month, send birthday and Christmas presents, and school supplies. We let these kids know that they are important. Pine Ridge has, last I heard, the lowest per capita income in America and the highest unemployment (around 65%). Like many reservations, substance abuse is high -- there are no jobs, nothing to do -- so people drink. Many times residents move to the cities, find nothing there, and return to the reservation. We hope to break the cycle of poverty by changing the way these children view themselves. Because the poverty is so bad, many families' standard of living is unknown to most of us: no central heating and sometimes no running water. Winters are bitterly cold in South Dakota and most homes are substandard with no insulation. Many Lakota families heat with only a wood burning stove and families sleep on the floor together. There isn't much money for warm clothes or bedding. Any size quilt is welcome. Shivani, the executive director of Circle of Children, said that families especially need blankets for babies. The truth is that every size is needed. Obviously, because of the level of poverty, they have to be functional -- i.e., easily washable. Melvina runs Children's Village, a group home for children that the Children's Services Dept. can't place. Lucille is a teacher and, as most teachers in an impoverished area, knows which families have the greatest need. Both are on the Board of Directors of Circle of Children. Geographical Area of Service: Pine Ridge, SD For Information: email Joyce Jones.
Charity Name: FISH (Friendly, Instant, Sympathetic Help) | Attention: Carol O'Neill Description: FISH is part of a worldwide network of volunteers who help local residents in need. The Herndon-Reston, VA group gives beds/mattresses to needy people, including many who are setting up home after leaving the shelter. In conjunction with this, we try to provide a quilt to go with each bed. Basically we are making quickie quilts: cheater cloth or large patches, tied rather than quilted. All sizes are needed. If you would like to make a quilt, or a top, or make a donation, it would be gratefully received and acknowledged. Geographical Area of Service: northern VA For Information: email Carol O'Neill.
Charity Name: Kaye Reed Chapter of Spokane Community Comforters | Attention: Cindy Collett Address: 817 East Longfellow, Spokane WA 99207 Description: We give all quilts we make to "people who need love as much as they need warmth." We try to pick groups that may not be as well known as some others and ones that aren't currently receiving quilts from another source. We also try to choose needs that involve a healing process for those involved (battered women and children, victims of child abuse, etc.) We have even given a quilt to a family who was burned out of their home as a result of religious persecution. All of our fabric, batting, backing, etc. are donated. We started out of many reasons, but one of the things we knew was that we all had fabrics and UFO's around that might never get finished and we knew people who would love them. (We're anxious to tell others how we started if they want to start their own group and don't know how.) Geographical Area of Service: Eastern Washington For Information: send SASE to the above address or email Cindy Collett.

Name: Sew Orphans' Snugglies | Attention: Karen Porter Address: 2903 Montebello Terrace, Baltimore MD 21214-3131 Descriptions: Tens of thousands of children remain in orphanages in Eastern Europe and Asia. The lucky children are being adopted but most remain in the institutions where there is usually inadequate attention, few decorations for visual stimulation and few toys. Every day, families travel to adopt. Most are only too happy to take supplies and gifts. A few of us have been making small quilts (about 18"x24"). Several dozen are already in baby homes in Russia. If you can make one, two or more small quilts, if you can encourage quilt groups or civic groups to make some, we thank you. Think simple but colorful -- a strip quilt, simple block quilt or printed design with a contrasting border would be great. Think small -- about the size of a pillowcase. Think thin -- takes up less space when packing. Flannel makes a wonderful soft backing and a pillowcase or sheeting has worked well for batting. These will be laundered frequently so they should be durable. Machine quilting is wonderful. Remember that these are for small children so please, no embellishments like buttons or tassels.
