LAVENDER

Lavender is the quintessential essential oil to have in your home. If you only have one, then this is it. Why? Because it is so effective in the treatment of burns.

Lavender is a natural antiseptic, antidepressant, sedative and detoxifier. It promotes healing and prevents scarring and helps stimulate the immune system. The healing process is thereby stimulated and wounds heal more quickly.

Inhaled with a diffuser, the oil is a calming. If you are having an anxious day, put some in your diffuser or, if you are off to an event or just feel stressed and can't use a diffuser, put a few drops on a tissue or hankie.

Also - don't forget to take it camping with you - it is a flea repellent and mosquitos don't like it either.

Tea Tree

Also know as Ti Tree comes from Melaleuca alternifolia which is native to Australia and was introduced to the Western World by Captain Cook. It is used externally on wounds, abrasions, cuts, scratches, sunburn, itching, herpes, burns, scalds, thrush, tick bites, fungal infections, staph, boils, pimples, bad breath, smelly feet sinus.

Tea Tree is non-toxic to the body, produces no negative side affects. Currently, in our home we are using Tea Tree for a bad facial outbreak of pimples. I am using it myself as an inhalant to help clean up my respiratory system after years of a nicotine addiction. I am now 61 days smoke free. 8-)

Chamomile

Chamomile is widely used in aromatherapy for its therapeutic effects on the mind and nervous system. It will ease depression, soothe an irritable psyche and lull you into restful sleep. You might try putting a drop or two on your forehead in the morning to help you through a busy day.

I use both the Roman and German Chamomile. Chamomile is most valued for its anti-inflammatory properties. This essential oil can be used to treat --- burns, psoriasis, asthma, diarrhea, all nervous and depressive conditions. It has been noted that it aids in the treatment of anorexia nervosa.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is used as a specific for the resperatory system. It has great value in a vaporizer to stimulate and loosen bronchial secretions so they can be coughed up. If you have a fever, try mixing eucalyptus mixed equally with peppermint oil and white vinegar added as a cooling spritz. This mix is also effective for acne or boils. You can also mix this with Tea Tree for external fungus infections or with Rosemary oil for aching muscles and arthritis.

Geranium

Geranium oil, also known as Rose Geranium. Rose Geranium is of most use for aged, wrinkling or older skin. When inhaled, the scent is antidepressant and averts tension. If you mix it with Rosemary oil and inhale, it will aid memory. For external applications, dilute with a carrier oil such as jojoba or almond but you can also add to lotions, hand creams, shampoos, etc. Geranium is thought to be an adrenal cortex stimulant and it mixes well with Camomile and Myrrh. You would inhale for adrenal function problems and can be used in a vaporizer as an anti-inflammatory for your lungs and stimulant to the thyroid.

Rosemary

Rosemary oil is distilled from the tops, leaves and smaller twigs of Rosemarinus officinalis. The plant itself has a long history with ritual and meditative applications. Rosemary is a VERY POWERFUL ESSENTIAL OIL and should be used judiciously. In extreme quantities either inhaled or taken internally. As I've mentioned before GET A BOOK before you begin purchasing oils. Rosemary is a powerful ingredient in body-care products and is reputed to stimulate hair growth.

Thyme

First and foremost about time -- never use NEAT on the skin. Always dilute. There are about ten different variations of Thyme and as it isone of the most useful medicinal herbs for ody care both internal and external, you will want to read about it. It is aromatic, antiseptic diaphoretic, stimulant and disinfectant. It can be used internally, externally and by inhalation. Inhaled Thyme oil is uplifting and relieves depression, stimulates the respiratory system and relieves the spasm of asthma. It is also mildly sedating and can be used for insomnia.

Lemon Oil

Lemon oil is expressed from the peel of limon. To make a pound of oil, you need to express 1500 lemons. Lemon oil is one of the most useful of the essential oils and should be on everyone's shelf. Internally its' uses include being a bactericide, and antiseptic, fever reducer, tonic, diuretic, repels internal parasites, calms. External uses include antispetic, cleansing astringent skin care and insect repellent. It will help get rid of worms, aid flatulence and purping, can be used as a gargle. Here is another oil, you need a book to investigate.

Peppermint Oil

This is one of THE MOST IMPORTANT essential oils. We are all familiar with the use of peppermint in our daily lives in gum, tea, toothpaste, candy, etc. Inhaled peppermint oil cools a fever, decongests sinuses, calms the mind, soothes a headache, acts as an antidepressant, stimulates the nervous system. Externally, used in a blend of carrier ois or fats you can use it as a chest rub for repiratory diseases.

Internally, you can put 1 drop on a sugar cube and suck it slowly to cure nausea and vomiting. Read more about Peppermint in your favorite book.

Clove

Clove has been in cultivation for at least 2000 years. Medicinally, clove oil is antiseptic stimulating, pain killing, a carminative, parasiticide and sometimes aphrodisiacal. Generally it is used for muscular aches and pains. It may be inhaled to overcome exhaustion and/or to stimulate memory and the respiratory system. If you inhale too much, it will induce a good sleep. This was on of the first oils to be directly applied to aching teeth and on warts (to remove them).
