NORTHEASTERN
WOMEN OF TODAY
located in York County
in the Manchester, Mt. Wolf, and York Haven area
The Northeastern Communities have had the benefit of a local service organization since 1964 when the "Jaycee Wives" were formally organized with eight members. Betty Vernon was the first President and meetings were held every three months. By 1967, a constitution and by-laws had been adopted. In 1968, under President Wanda Gillespie, the group began meeting monthly. For 20 years, we were an auxiliary to the Northeastern Jaycees. Since 1964, our name changed from Jaycee Wives, to Jayceettes, then to the Jaycee Women.
In the years since our chapter was organized, our projects have been many and varied. A spaghetti dinner was one of the earliest fundraisers with proceeds being donated to the Northeastern High School to purchase books. From the beginning, baskets of food were packed and delivered to families at Christmas. Thus began our longest continuously run community service project.....Christmas Needy Baskets.
The list of projects that we have sponsored over the years seems endless...

Speaking of State and National Meetings..........
In 1982 it was decided that we would take a major step by becoming affiliated with the State organization. Three short years later, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the U.S. Jaycees were required to admit women into their ranks as members and the women's auxiliaries were dissolved, we found ourselves back where we started - just a local chapter.
But one lady had a vision. Better yet, she had the wisdom to act on that vision. In 1985, Hallie Elicker of our Dover Pennsylvania Chapter, became our founding mother when she "gave birth" to the Pennsylvania Women of Today. Our local chapter became the Northeastern Women of Today, affiliated with the Pennsylvania Women of Today and the United States Women of Today.
We now have over 30 members in our chapter. We have continued to
run the "old" projects, but we are always adding new ones to our
annual plan of action. We work hard in our local communities and take time out for fun, like shopping trips or our annual ladies night out. Members have
attended National Conventions in places like Boston, Massachusetts; Omaha, Nebraska; St.
Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, and Rapid City, South Dakota. We have also
assisted our State organization in hosting a United States Women of Today
Convention in 1993 (New Cumberland), 1999 (Lancaster) and 2003 (Harrisburg).
In our chapter, we are fortunate to have two United States Women of Today Ambassadors,
the current state President - Vicki Jo Smith, five past State Presidents, and numerous individuals who have served and are serving as State Officers and Program Managers. Our membership is a wonderful mix of individuals with years of Women of Today experience and new members with fresh outlooks and new ideas. We are teachers, homemakers, secretaries, managers in industry, members who are actively involved with their careers and members who are retired and loving it. Our members are single, married, mothers and grandmothers, volunteers in their churches and schools, and members of a variety of other organizations who always find time for Women of Today. We are proud that our local members are willing to give of their time and themselves, caring, sharing, and working together to serve their communities and enrich their own lives.
We hope that as you learn about our organization, you will find something that interests you, something that will become your reason for wanting to join the Northeastern Women of Today. Our chapter meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the Mt. Wolf Borough Building located at 345 Chestnut Street in Mt. Wolf, Pennsylvania.

Ode to Volunteers
Many will be shocked to find when the day of judgment
nears, that there's a special place in heaven set aside for
volunteers; Furnished with big recliners, satin couches and
footstools; where there's no committee chairman, no group
leaders or car pools; no eager team that needs a coach, no
bazaar and no bake sale; There will be nothing to staple;
not one thing to fold or mail; telephone lists will be outlawed,
but...A finger-snap will bring cool drinks and gourmet dinners and
rare treats fit for a king or queen. You ask, who'll serve those
privilege few and work for all they're worth?
Why, all those who reaped the benefits
and not once volunteered on earth.
