Morning Sickness

There is all sorts of advice about morning sickness but from my own experience, and that of my other sister-friends, there are two important "must-haves."

  • Always try to have a little something in your stomach -- don't ever get completely empty. Of course, overnight this is difficult. Many of us kept a packet of crackers or plain cookies on our nightstand and would munch a couple before getting out of bed.
  • Pregnancy Tea -- all of us agree that this is wonderful. It is an herb tea of raspberry leaf, spearmint and other gentle herbs. You can find it at most health-food stores and it is actually called "Pregnancy Tea."

My friend Moana would make a giant tumblerful and drink it all day. I believe she made iced-tea out of it. I drank it warm and like her, I sipped on it all day. Luckily, it tastes good, too!

Must-Have Books

There are many very good books out there, but here are the three "must-haves":

  • The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy -- Iovine. (This is by and away the BEST -- it's everything your girlfriends tell you and your doctor doesn't.)
  • What to Expect When You're Expecting -- Eisenberg, Murkoff and Hathaway. This leads you through, month by month, detailing common questions and answers.
  • What to Eat When You're Expecting -- Eisenberg, Murkoff and Hathaway. Okay, I will fully admit that I did not go "by the book" when it came to my eating. This book, in my humble opinion, is overkill, but it does give a good general guide to how to eat when pregnant. Simply ignore the fanatic parts (no white flour and sugar allowed at all, only organic vegetables recommended), enjoy the ideas and recipes and eat in moderation.

Sister-Friend is always interested in your comments and ideas -- in general or about her web page. Send her a message at CalypsoZ@swbell.net. She thanks you very much.
