Why Don't You ...

Feeling bored? Want to do something but just don't have any ideas how to beat this malaise? Try one of the following ideas:

  • Throw a girls-only party. Invite your other sister-friends over for a no-boys-allowed party. Instruct everyone to bring their favorite appetizer or dessert and their favorite party game. I did this recently and we all had a ball. My husband, surveying leftovers of such treats as brie and caramelized onion puffs, jalapeno-cheese filled salami cornucopias and the like, noted that if he had held a boys-only party, one guy would have brought pretzels and another would've brought beer.
  • Redecorate. No, I don't mean spending lots of money ... move furniture around, use a different comforter on your bed. Pick up a book on Feng Shui decorating and see what you think.
  • New food. Surf around on the internet and find a recipe you've never tried before -- maybe from a different culture?
  • Write a letter to someone who hasn't heard from you in a long time. An old schoolmate, a great-aunt ... if you're not married, how about a long-lost romance?
  • If you don't have children, revisit your childhood. Go to a roller skating rink and then dine at Chuck E. Cheese.
  • If you do have children, get a babysitter and do something you can't do with your kids. Go see a sexy movie, eat at a restaurant with tablecloths and no kids menu. Or maybe go shoot some pool at a dark musty bar ... remember how much fun that used to be?
  • New music. Get a cd of an artist you've always liked on the radio, but never got around to getting a record of.
  • Have a picnic. Some dry salami, crusty french bread, garlicky cheese spread, red wine .... if the weather doesn't permit, then spread a blanket and have the picnic either in front of a roaring fire, or in front of a good classic movie ... Breakfast at Tiffany's?
  • And speaking of breakfast ... get up early and meet your honey at a cafe for breakfast before work one morning. Over eggs and bacon, tell each other how you love the "regular" moments of life with each other, as well as the special times.
