NAME: Vicki L. Davis

EMAIL: vdavis31@hotmail.com

OCCUPATION: Vol. FF-NREMT-IED

BIO: My name is Vicki Davis and I am 26 years old. I live on the east side of Cincinnati in Amelia. I started in the fire service in January of 1997.
I joined my local department for EMS in the beginning, then I started helping at the fire scenes, and that's when it officially began. I joined the fire-side of the department and the rest is history.
I first really thought of becoming a firefighter a long time ago. I can remember as a kid, watching and "chasing" down the firetrucks that drove down the street. I always thought to myself, "I would love to do that." One day my older brother and I talked about me becoming a firefighter. It was always a dream, but nothing I really pursued at that time.
Then one day it happened, I joined the department. I went in as a volunteer and now plan to make it my career. I have gained a lot of respect for the people in this field and improved my self-confidence level as well. I enjoy this position and everything that goes along with it, including having to roll hose.
This is not a field for all, but it is something anyone can try.

NAME: Jennifer Sayre

EMAIL: jsayre@theonramp.net

OCCUPATION: EMT/FF

BIO: I was born 12-01-1968 in Franklin County, Ohio. I sorta grew up in a small town of a population of 800. What I mean by sorta is that we moved a lot. My father is a truck driver and was constantly transferred. I lived in Maine, Florida, and Texas but we always returned to our original home town inbetween transfers. I loved the road and wanted to become a trucker like my daddy so bad but he said he would break my arm if i ever pursued that career. I have much respect for the man. So much respect that i did not become a truck driver. (because I knew he would keep that promise)heehee..

My fascination with big trucks turned to a fascination with even bigger better trucks..louder trucks..FIRE TRUCKS!!! I wanted to become a fireman in the worst way but back then in a small town that was unacceptable for a female to do. If you did you were considered either a "butch" or a "layabout". I turned my sights to the field of animals..I was gonna go to college to become a vet. Unfortunate turn of events led to my family and I not being able to afford college. We were typical middle class folks. My parents made too much money to get financial aid but not enough to pay for the schooling.

Once again my dreams were shot down like a buck on the first day of deer season. I spent over half the next decade as a daycamp instructor/teacher year round. Although i hated when the kids were injured,I secretly loved workin on them and making them feel better..over the years the children and other staff members came to trust me with injuries and illnesses. Even with basic first aid training only, I gave those children the best care I could.

Once again, tho, money ruled my life and I was forced to get a better paying job to make ends meet. After a few years I decided not to let finances get the best of me and seein hows dear ole dad had the dough rollin in after gettin rid of all us kids I went to him for help.

I asked my father if I could take out a small loan for EMT-B training and I promised to pay him back. He gladly offered to pay for it since he was not able to pay for college years ago. We made a deal that if I passed and used my skills I did not have to pay him back. I did pass tops in my class and got high score on National Registry. I did it for dad.

Here tho there arent many split departments and I realized I would have to get my fire certification. It is a funny turn that life takes a person on sometimes. Fire was what I had wanted to do in the beginning, EMS was what i had come to love, and EMS led me back to fire. So i went back to dad and hit him up for more dollars and we made the same deal.! Again I passed. For dad.

The toughest hurdle was yet to be crossed. You see, I have asthma. Not many Depts will hire an asthmatic. I found one that would give me a chance and I have yet to let them down. I not only proved to my father that I could do this, I also proved it to myself. There is always a way, one just has to find the path. You see, if you do not like the pattern of your life just twist the kalidascope and the pattern will change. Sometimes it takes a lot of guts and a little pride swallowing, but that one small twist can give you the world.
