I would just like to let you know you have a great thing going here and I am VERY happy to see it... I am a firefighter on a small fire department in a very small town.. I am the only woman on the department and I get treated different and everybody does t to me.. (even my husband who is on the department too) I am the outcast of the place because there is no other women and they act like I never know what I am talking about.. They will start talking about something to do with a fire and they always go in great detail with me just to make sure I know what they are talking about.. (DUH!!! if I didn't I wouldn't be on the department) In September we went to a fire in Washington County, Indiana where a female firefighter died, and now everytime we go to a fir they make me get drinks, cigarettes, and do small gofer jobs, and it really bothers me.. I am very happy to see there are other females out there that like to do as I do and I am not just a loner out here in a great big world..

I've been on the Lauramie Township Volunteer Fire Department for 8 yrs, an officer for the past 5. First Responder in both Medical & Haz Mat, as well as Firefighter I. Our department is small with only 19 active members, but we do the best we can and ar very proud of what we do. I think one of the scariest moments I've ever experienced was my first field fire. It engulfed one square mile of field. When we thought a section was out, the wind would kick up and turn it right back towards us. I never re lized before that day how fast a fire can move in an open field. It took us 8 hours and 5 departments to put it out. No one was injured and no buildings were lost! To all of us, please be careful out there and watch your partner's back.

I joined the FRS in 1998, and I was the only female member at that time, and the second youngest in the brigade. The crew were fantastic to me - a few of the members were maybe a bit sceptical, but no more than they are with any new member. Our captain as fantastic, and all the other members too. The first burn-offs and training sessions we did they all took a lot of time to explain things to me, and made sure I had a go with everything from the firebugs to the pumps and hoses. I have had a really goo time, and never felt any real discrimination like I have been reading in these pages - I am so lucky! I do feel sorry though for one of the women in a brigade in WA who spent so much time going on about sexual discrimination that all the guys were scare to have a joke with her in case she took it the wrong way - she misses out on so much of the friendship that goes on after meetings and training and call-outs. I think that sexual discrimination should not be tolerated, but sometimes people go too far th other way. The only real animosity I have felt has been from women themselves who think I am in the brigade to flirt with their men - I am not out to do that! That would ruin the friendly stirring and joking that takes place, and I wouldn't trade that f r anything! I don't know a solution to their worries - if anyone has one please let me know! but I am sad that I miss out on some friendships due to this. last but not least, good luck to the manji Jrs in this years competitions and good luck to the manj mup maniacs in this years titanium barrow bash!

This is a great web page. I have been in the city fire dept. for 11 years. Originally, I was a paramedic and transferred to fire suppression six months ago. I'm assigned to Truck 1 which is in the OldTown firestation. It is extremely challenging and hard ork , but I'm lucky to work with a bunch of great guys who don't hesitate to help me out. The important thing is to take the initative to ask for training. For the men of the Baltimore City Fire Dept. it's new having women in suppression , so they are ske tical and can be cruel, bit give it everything you've got and it makes them relize you can do just as good as they can. Well it's nice to see there are a whole bunch of us out there!! I'm 21 and recently passed my city's fire department tests. But with limited experience chances of being hired were slim. As a remedy to that problem I just got hired with one of the volunte r stations in the city. Hopefully in just a few short years I'll be doing what I've wanted to do since I was 12!

FF in chesterfield co. va. -- i never saw any other women back then -- it was not very easy being the first ---but now there are hundreds of us --- and we are all less alone--- i am a 1st lt at my present dept and have been here for 10yrs--- i enjoyed the site --great graphics!!!!!

Great page! I've been a Firefighter for over 5 years now. My husband is also a Firefighter, and an Asst. Chief. Oh well, somebody has to be boss. :) My oldest son just became a career Firefighter, and is still with our dept. My 16 year old son joine our Vol. service last August. We have around 7 women in our fire dept. Out of those 7, 3 of us are interior firefighters. We have a total of 30 active members. Out of that 30, around 15 are interiors. We recieve over 180 calls a year, and some are EM . I'll frequent your page often.

THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO CINDY MACMILLAN'S QUESTIONS. AS I STATED IN MY ENTRY, I AM AN EXTREMELY PETITE FEMALE WHO WORKS WITH SOME VERY MUSCULAR MEN. EVERY MORNING WHEN I WOULD GO OVER THE EQUIPMENT BY MYSELF. I WOULD TAKE MY SCBA OFF OF THE ENGINE AND PRAC ICE DONNING IT, INCLUDING MY AIRMASK. NEXT, I WOULD PRACTICE PUTTING ON MY TURNOUTS, SEVERAL TIMES. OFCOURSE, IT's different when you get a fire call and your adrenalin is pumping and you feel like you are all thumbs. by practicing daily, it gives you one up on speed. being new at the fire service, it does take time to get all this down, but practice makes perfect and before you know it, you'll be just as quick as the guys. As for the excercises, you need quite a bit of upper body strength. Start with your legs by doing bending and stretches. Go to a dept. store and buy some dumbbells approx. 5&10 pds. Do some curls and extensions. If you have time in the mornings and I do mean EARLY, there are a couple of excersising and weight lifting shows that come on c ble. These shows give you basic ideas on building upper body strength without killing yourself. A good diet high in carbohydrates, protein, and potassium high. Go to a good vitamin store, such as GNC and get yourself some ultra mega women vitamins and eat plenty of fruit (bananas, cantuloupes, etc). I also went to my more muscular colleages and participated in their daily weight lifting and excercise training. By doing this, they were most impressed and seemed even more willing to help my since I was showi g the initiative and not having the I'm a helpless little female syndrome. Please try and do all this and you'll surprise yourself with strength and stamina. By they way, I'm only 5'4 and 110#s. Good Luck, Cindy!!!!! NIKKI

I really like the web page. I will add it as a bookmark. My husband and I just "graduated" from our local fire dept in October of 1998. I am one of two females on the dept but so far, the men have been ok with that. Every once in a while I hear comment like "We used to be able to go to the bathroom with the door open." So my comment back was, "what is stopping you now"?. Anyway, I haven't been on a fully involved fire yet and a part of me is kinda glad. My biggest concern is getting there and knowing hat to do, how to do it and when. Does that sound stupid??? The first run I went on I was so nervous, I didn't button my pants, had my coat half on and almost forgot my helmet. I am glad it was only an alarm drop but you never know with those either. am amazed at how quick some of those guys are. They are dressed and on the truck before I even get my pants on. I guess all of that comes with time. Hope I didn't babble too much but I do have one last question for anyone that wants to respond. What ind of exercises would you recommend?? I weigh about 110lbs and I want to build my strength mainly in my arms and legs as well as my lower back. Those air packs killed my back the day after one of our drills. Any suggestions??? Would love to hear from other females out there.

Hi Sam ! This is a great website! I get to browse through it while I'm at work since I don't have a computer of my own and I've noticed there has not been any new entries in the quest book or anywhere else. I am new at using a computer, so maybe I'm not l oking in all the right places. However, I'm glad to see a place where the ladies can meet. I am in a large urban dept. in the michigan area. I am only one of six women in the dept. and let me tell you, it's been a battle! I am a petite female and weigh ap rox. 110#s, but I can throw a 16 0r 24 ft. ladder by myself, reel a fully charged line, etc. I have a strict excercise and weight lifting regimen that I follow. Even with all this, I can't please all the guys. During overhauling after a fire while the guy socialize, I keep working. Not so much to prove myself anymore, but that is part of my job and I love it. I believe, no matter who you are just do your best and keep a motivated and strong attitude. Firefighting is hard and rewarding work. It makes me fe l good after the fire is over with and I am standing outside taking my gear off and a civilian says "wow, a woman can do what a man does"!!! I hope in the future more people log on and sign your guestbook. I know this is long, but I don't get to talk abou my day at work to often to other female firefighters. Have a great career and be safe.

Unfortunately, the Fire Service is slow to shake off old traditions. Since it is generally regarded as a "Boys Club", some women feel as if they will not be accepted. Like other professions, once you gain a foothold, and show you can handle what comes alo g, it will all work out. I, for one, will be more than happy to have anyone in my command, regardless of sex, who shows the necessary dedication and professionalism that has made firefighting the great job that it is. hi! this is a super site. i am in the baltimore city fire dept. i am stationed at the oldtown firehouse which is quite large. it houses E-6 (which i ride), Truck 1, Medic 7, BC2, our shift commander and numerous other units. i am proud to say i was the fi st female ever assigned to oldtown. it was hard at first, but eventually, everything fell into to place. now there is another female, linda, who is assigned to Truck 1, so her and i stick together and help each other out. i started out as a cadet for the ire dept. when i was in high school. i knew immediately that i could do nothing else, because firefighting is the ultimate. be safe !

It is so nice to see so many female firefighters out there. Sometimes I feel alone being the only women on my volunteer fire dept. especially being the first women they have ever had. My boyfriend is also a volunteer in the same dept as I am. I have also worked for City of Raleigh Fire Dept. but that was a very bad experience. Just finished reading the women in the fire service with the various women that were selected to be featured from the various states. One letter hit hard on my emotions and that was Jen's letter. I have personnally seen Jen in action on various calls from medical to trauma. One call in particuliar struck me as amazing. It involved a 3 year old girl who fell and cut her head on a fireplace mantel. Jen bonded with that child like I have never seen before and that girl let her treat her without so much as a w mper. The compassion and caring she showed proved to me that she was in the right profession. Jen your Dad would be proud as I know a Paramedic in Maryland was..Great article Jen..Ralph

Sam - Great site. I am so impressed...I wish I had the time and know-how to do a 'Women in EMS' site like this. Have you ever thought about expanding to a 'Women in Services' site. I don't fight fires (NO WAY!!!), but one of the EMS services I am invol ed with does rescue. Lots of overlap for all of us, and the bottom line is - we all want to protect and save the people that depend on us to be there, whether it's snowing 2 feet, or whether it's Thanksgiving, or Christmas, or our child's birthday - and hether there is a fire to be extinguished or a loved one having a medical crisis. Often, we're all there together - as EMS stands by at a structure fire, or as the fire department first-responds and stabilizes the patient and keeps them alive until the a bulance arrives. Too often, services 'tussle' over 'turf' and forget that most important thing...the people we have made a committment to protect and serve. And we're there. And we CARE. And the satisfaction of knowing that we make a difference is all we ask for. That's reward enough. Congratulations on a fantastic site! Allisynne (amd)

My company (FSI) provides testing services to fire departments and one of our priorities is helping increase diversity in the fire service. We are especially interest d in ensuring a fair physical ability test for entry firefighters that will minimize or eliminate adverse impact against women candidate.
