I Say!

How about a spot of Londoning?

I drove from the Netherlands to Belgium, then Gery drove us into France to the Chunnel, where we put the car on a train into the UK. Four countries in one day! Whew! Here is Gery grinning while we wait to load up and cross. He hadn't been to the UK in ages and he's quite fond of the place.
We stayed with a pal of mine from Hissyfit, Joy, and her husband. Their place is a converted schoolhouse in the east part of London, handy by the Tube, really fantastic. Cheers to frabjous Joy and the enigmatic Mr.Joy. Thanks again, you nice people!
Saturday we headed out for some shopping: Gery for DVDs, myself for some clothes. Here Gery plays with Season 6 of Friends.
And the main idea behind the trip was to hook up with some gals from Hissyfit. From left to right, we are ysabella, rosemary, Joy, and Miss Weeze. In the historic George Inn, a pub run by the National Trust, near London Bridge.
Later on after some shifting around of people and a visit to the new Tate Modern, here we have rosemary, Joy, Sunclytie, and ysabella having a bite on the Strand.
On Sunday after a sumptuous Brit breakfast with our kind hosts at a local organic pub, we trekked out with groaning arteries to Leeds Castle in Kent, conveniently on our way back to the Chunnel. Leeds Castle is stunning and interesting, although I couldn't take any snaps inside.
It has a great maze also. It's not old, it was built recently, but it was SO fun. I never got to do this before! I was singing to myself a bit...can you guess what I was singing? *answer at bottom of page*
Yours truly, once we got to the center and exit of the maze (we had to have help!). You can go up some steps and take a look.
Gery, looking a bit like Alan Rickman in this photo, also surveys the labyrinth.
Then to exit you have to go down underground, into the Grotto...which was just so neat! Gery looks through stone eyes...
Just my kind of thing. I'm serious, this was SO cool.
Shells everywhere, thronelike seats, mosaics, sculpture, little things to peer at, fountains...
Here the walls are covered in dried moss and the ceiling in live moss...and then we emerged back into the real, rainy world and made the long journey back. Thanks, G, for driving.

*What was I singing? From the Secret Garden:

"It's a maze, this garden. It's a maze of paths
Meant to lead a man astray...
Take a left and then
Turning left again
Is how the soul can find the way..."

Continuing on a bit to...

"Skip, skipped the ladies to the master's gate,
Sip, sipped the ladies while the master ate,
Tiptoed the chambermaids and stole their pearls,
Snip, snipped the gardener and cut off their curls."
