Janet! And the Mystery that is Shakespeare!

Some people don't really believe that Shakespeare was a real person. Janet and I investigate.

The house where Shakespeare was born. If you believe he was a real person, that is. The supposed baptism record shows his name entered in Latin, as "Guliemus filius Johannes Shakespere," or "William, son of John Shakespeare" for us plebes. I had two years of Latin and I don't see how you get William from Guliemus. The handwriting's crappy too...frankly I'm suspicious.
Lovely gardens behind the place where the house used to be, where Shakespeare died ("New Place"). The house itself was torn down in 1759 by its owner at that time. Considering there was already Shakespeare-based tourism at the time, this seems a foolish move...
The Avon river, replete with swans. They're probably fake too.
The church where Shakespeare is buried - it was Good Friday, so we couldn't go in. Oh, SURE.
Janet and I don't care! We just like the plays. That night we saw As You Like It - "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players."

My favorite way to quote Shakespeare is to quote the Manhattan Transfer quoting Macbeth (from "Sing Joy Spring"):

"Life's but a walking shadow, a player poor,
That struts and frets upon the stage and you see no more.
A tale that truly has an idiotic ring
That's full of lots of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
That's right, signifying nothing, I'll repeat it nothing, don't forget it, nothing!
(And that's the reason for the Spring of Joy that the Father put inside of every single girl and boy...)"

Judge for yourself.
