Here in Maine we are battling the Storm of ‘98. Ice, ice, and more ice. Thousands of people have lost power, water, telephones, etc. There is destruction everywhere, and Maine has been compared to a war zone along with New York and has been declared a federal disaster area. My family was one of the lucky ones. We were only without power four days, and we had telephone and water. There are others who cannot even hope for power and/or water for several more days, and the weatherman says the freezing rain and snow is coming again along with wind chill. Please keep these people in your prayers.
If there is any good to come out of this tragedy, it’s the way people all over the state have pulled together to support one another and to provide services to those in need. A restaurant in Brewer offered free meals to those without power, a laundrymat in Bangor offered free laundry services for 24 hours to those in need, a local taxi service is offering free transportation to area shelters, and I’m sure there were similar services being offered in other parts of the state. Store have had to give food away because of no refrigeration to keep it from spoiling. People are getting food, water, and other essentials to those who cannot leave their homes because they are surrounded by downed power lines, fallen trees, snow, etc. Neighbors are helping neighbors, and strangers are helping strangers.
One thought is foremost in my mind, however. Why does it take a tragedy for people to come together? Why can’t we be a loving and caring society all the time? Imagine it! If we could put aside our differences, accept people for who they are and what they are and not judge each other, and reach out to each other each and every day, we could heal the world! What a concept!
I know what you’re thinking. Yeah . . . what about the abusers, the thieves, the alcoholics, the drug dealers, etc. There will always be a dark side to everything. But if we joined forces, got involved, and reached out, we could eventually stop wars. Think if it! Peace in your lifetime! What a legacy to pass on to our children and their children!
I am a firm believer in The Golden Rule - "do unto others as you would have others do unto you" and also that whatever you do unto others is returned to you twofold - good or bad. I've tried it, and it works.
It seems as if evil is taking over the world, and we're just sitting back and allowing it. Please get involved. It's not an easy job, but it takes but a small step to start it. Start with your community. If EVERYONE gets involved, think of the power we'd have! And it can only get stronger as we grow in numbers.
Get involved on the internet. Pornography is running rampant on the Net. Report sites that portray offensive material, and don't give up until that site is wiped out. When it is, move on to another one, and another, and another.
Hunger. Why is there hunger in our country? Children are starving. Sure, I know it's because their parents aren't being responsible and spending money needed to feed and clothe their children on beer, cigarettes, and other things. But are we going to continue to punish the children for their parents' stupidity? Get involved in school lunch programs. Does your school have a free lunch program? Does the school serve breakfast? Maybe they should start. Breakfast and lunch would be two sure meals hungry children would have. Do you have clothes laying around that your children have outgrown? Maybe your school can get involved in a program where they could give out clothing to needy children in a way that would not seem like charity. Be creative, people! These children are the adults of tomorrow. They will remember the love and support others showed them and will grow to remember what others did for them and will help others as adults. Please support your local soup kitchens, homeless shelters, etc. The feeling you get knowing you are helping make a difference is awesome!
Racism. What is up with THAT, anyway?! Why should it make any difference what color or culture another person is? Sheesh! Live and let live, people! "Judge not lest ye be judged also".
There is strength in numbers, my friend. Let's stand united - for divided the evil wins!
