late night talks and cigarettes
and plays by mr. durang
it was fun while it lasted
but it really didn't mean a thing
i told you right up front
that we could never be
but you always want what you can't have
and this time it was me
i finally got my head together
so i can get out of this place
and i won't miss your phone calls
and i won't miss your face
i was fine before i met you
i'll be fine when you are gone
it's been a crazy couple of months
i don't know what took so long
so take the gifts you've given me
and walk right out of my life
i never was your girlfriend
and i'll never be your wife
you think that you know everything
and can see the future too
you say we'll be together
but i've got news for you
the years ahead aren't something
you can mold with artist's hands
and i've got my own life to live
and you're not part of my plans
so get your head together
and get out of this place
and don't make any phone calls
and don't think of my face
you were fine before you met me
you'll be fine when i am gone
it's been a crazy couple of months
i don't know what took so long
please take the gifts you've given me
and walk right out of my life
you never were my girlfriend
and you can never be my wife
words of love and flowers
cannot melt this heart of steel
and nothing you could ever do
will change the way i feel
the memories of the months we shared
are packed up in a box
you think that you still hold the keys
but i've thrown out all my locks
so take the shit you've given me
and walk out of my life
i'd never be your girlfriend
and i sure as hell won't be your wife
