I try not to keep track
But I can't help thinking back
The mermaid lying in the sand
That we made with our four hands
All the paths that I tread
The hope, the fear, the dread
All the memories swirling 'round
As they burn to the ground
The past, a future not yet revealed
The scars from wounds long healed
Embedded in my skin
Are the truths that lie within

That dark and shameless night
When I could not find a light
Your letters in a drawer
Shards of my heart upon the floor
The impossible choice
These words I cannot voice
The dreams I've laid to rest
The echoes in my chest
