If I could give my best loved child
a gift of priceless worth,
I'd give the gift of thoughtfulness,
and giving on this earth.
I'd teach her not to always ask,
and know she would receive,
but find the joy true giving brings
in loving care, believe.
It hurts inside to always give
and meet her every need,
to stretch myself beyond my means,
and of her dreams take heed.
And then, forgotten, sit alone,
as milestones pass me by,
yet put a smile into my voice,
while silent, inside cry.
Oh, daughter, if you only knew
the wisdom of my years,
you'd look and feel beyond yourself,
spare me ungrateful tears.
You'd learn to give more than you take,
and then give one ounce more.
You'd feel the joy that giving brings,
and peek through Heaven's door.
