To my sister:

Where are you, Claire, this Christmas,
are gifts beneath your tree?
Did Daddy get the bicycle
he couldn't get for me?
Did you hang your stocking up,
find an orange in the toe?
Or maybe dolls and sugarplums
to set your eyes aglow?
You never had a Christmas here,
I really wish you had.
You left me as an only child,
no sister made me sad.
We could have shared a home once,
and fought like sisters do.
I could have told you secret dreams,
and learned of boys from you.
You never knew life's sorrow,
you knew no fear or joy.
You only took one breath of life -
more than her baby boy.
There's lots that I could teach you
about life down here below.
Some things so grand and beautiful,
some things no child should know.
I can't send you a Christmas gift,
but here's a wish from me:
I hope Mom lets you put some strands
of tinsel on the tree.
I hope you're thin so you can have
the candy kept from me.
And please believe in Santa Claus,
'cause childhood dreams are free.
Perhaps you had the kinder choice,
life was not meant to be.
You left me as her only child,
and I had to be me.

Love,
Sharon
