Journal keeping

Keeping a journal can be very rewarding. A journal can take several forms. You may wish to chronicle the events of your days. Or you may wish to plumb the events of your nights with a dream journal. A journal can be a place to write about your hopes, fears, and complaints. Whatever path you choose, your journal will become a tool for self-discovery. Here are some ideas to get you started.

  • The "I remember" method was made famous by Natalie Goldberg in her book Writing Down the Bones. Goldberg suggests that you freewrite, that is, write as much as you can without stopping to edit your writing. Use "I remember" as a prompt. If that takes you down a different trail once you get going, that's fine. The important thing is to write without pausing to critique yourself. You may wish to time yourself for 5 or 10 minutes, or set a page limit. Don't stop writing until you meet that limit.

  • Photographs are full of stories. Pick out photographs important to you and write about them in detail. Who are the people in the picture? What event was captured? What stage of life were you (or the subject) at during the time? Alternately, pick out 3-5 photographs of yourself at different points of your life. What stays the same in your life through these years? What has changed?

  • Make lists of your favorite things. Pick one or two and write about them in detail. What do they say about yourself?

  • A talisman, according to Webster's dictionary, is an "object held to have magical or protective powers; a charm." What object(s) are talismans in your life?

  • What are your favorite quotes? Pick one or two and write about their significance to you.

    Artwork

  • Draw an outline of your body. Lifesize is best! Fill in the outline with things that describe you or reflect your qualities. You may wish to fill the shape with doodles, color, or clippings. My favorite clippings include evocative words and strong colors or patterns. Write about your creation.

    Books to cultivate creativity

  • Any book by Sark. My favorites are The Creative Companion and Succulent Wild Woman.

  • Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones and Wild Mind

  • Marlene A. Schiwy's A Voice of Her Own
