• Theory: external, internal, signs & symptoms, treatment
• Practical: scenario (amputation and forearm bleeding)

• temperature is one of the vital signs
• method: a) by touch, use back of hand or b) use thermometer
• 2 main types of thermometers: oral (longer tip) and rectal (shorter tip)
• we all practiced measuring temperature by the oral method

1. Hand washing:
   • make lather with soap
   • brush between fingers, brush under fingernails
   • wash for at least 2 minutes
   • remember to NOT touch the tap or doorknob with clean, bare hands
2. Sit casualty down (at rest)
3. Preparing the thermometer
   • using an alcohol swab, wash & clean thermometer - wipe from Tip --> End (Clean to dirty)
   • check for leaks, cracks (if found, do not use)
   • shake the thermometer so mercury is below 35 degrees
4. Ask these questions before taking temperature:
   • "Why do you want your temperature taken?" ( This may give you a hint of any underlying illness )
   • "Have you eat or drink anything in the last 20 minutes?" ( Wait for at least 20 minutes before taking a oral temperature )
   • "Did you smoke in the last 20 minutes?"
   • "Did you shower or exercise in the last 20 minutes?"
5. Put thermometer under the casualties tongue, says "Do not bite."
6. After 3 min or longer (most accurate if 8-10 min), take out of mouth and read the thermometer (Normal = 37 degrees)
7. Cleaning
   • using an alcohol swab, wash & clean thermometer - wipe from End --> Tip (Clean to dirty)
   • wash it with soap and water
   • soak in an antiseptic solution (at least 5 minutes)
   • rinse with water
   • dry and store in its case

• used for children
• follow Oral thermometer procedure above, but change these things:
• use the shorter tip thermometer
• ask casualty to lie down on left side (due to colon's path inside body)
• bend knees slightly
• smear petroleum jelly on the tip
• insert inside casualty's rectum ( 1 inch )
• hold on to thermometer for 3-5 minutes, then take out
• read it ( Normal = 37.5 degrees celcius )
• clean it

• follow Oral thermometer procedure above, but change these things:
• use the longer tip thermometer (oral thermometer)
• make sure casualty's armpit is dry
• put thermometer under armpit and ask casualty to squeeze arm down to hold it
• after 15 minutes, take out and read ( Normal = 36.5 degrees celcius )
• clean it

• all members were invited to this leadership seminar

• Mr. D. Bain spoke highly of our discipline of uniforms and our pride Varsity brings St. John Ambulance
• Dr. Kenneth F (our Officer in Charge) thanked him for his presence and his work he has done for Varsity
  
  
• For National Volunteer Week: Johnson L wrote (on behalf of DS Mable C) to Mr. Brian C to request Lapel Pins to recognize our members
• All members attended were given out one beautiful pin: light blue shield, with 2 hands shaking
• make sure you get yours from our Training Officer next meeting

• Varsity's Annual Summer camp will be on July 31st weekend, Gina I. is heading the Camp Committee, please attend June 7th's Varsity meeting to obtain the application form
• Leadership course available for application - Stratford, Ontario [ Contact our Officer in Charge for more info ]
• Div. Inspection of #1037 Agincourt: July 11 (Sat), 10am, Chinese Culture Centre. If you can attend please contact our Training Officer
• Div. Inspection of #333 North York : Sept. 20 (Sun), 1:30pm, 3621 Dufferin St. Dennison Armoury. If you can attend please contact our Training Officer
• Area Inspection was held yesterday (May 24th, 98). Lots of awards were given out, Therapy Dogs were there too
• Emergency Response Cyclist Program is ON HOLD at this point, waiting for final approval
• Crusader Newsletter (June Issue) Volume 2, Issue 5 is now available

• Barb L. prepared one scenario with 2 casualties for a pair of members to practice
• she reviewed the process of BAP and the sequence of actions to take
• simulators (Norm, Barb, and Gina) simulated the injuries
• other members while waiting, reviewed the multiple choice question section with Johnson L
• Everyone had a great time training and enjoyed Barb's presence
• Barb L. praised us all for our highly skilled members
• Johnson L. thanked her on behalf of Varsity and we treated her for lunch afterwards

• 4 recruits also attended our meeting
• two of them acted as our casualties and got "into the action"

• Place: 23 Grange Road (University Settlement Recreation Centre)

• 726 would like to thank all members of the audience (looks like a record breaking turnout)
• all 726 members did a great job: from the march pass to the first aid demo (childbirth), to the amazing drill demostration
• Mr. Lam expressed his thanks to 726 for assisting the growth of other divisions (Markville, North York and Agincourt)

• after our successful drill demonstration at our Inspection 2 weeks ago,
• our DS has decided to give everyone a well deserved break from Drill
  
  

Announcements:

• a CPR recertification course was held yesterday (Saturday, Oct 17, 1998). The Training officer contacted all members who needed it
• next BAP dates are: Nov 1 (Milner), Nov 29 (Aberfoyle), Dec 5 (Wellesley)
  
  
• Varsity 726 X'Mas/New Year Party! ( Jan 2, 1999 ) Kit L. is organizing and requires volunteers for: Food, Music, DJ, Treasurer, Games, and Clean-up
  
  
• after this meeting, all 726 members are invited to Jim's house for lunch (Officers of 726 will cook!)
  
  
• A New training for 726 members: Chinese 101. Kenneth F and team (Gina I, Kit L, Ellen S) will be teaching basic Cantonese each meeting
  • the goal: to allow all Varsity members to speak in Cantonese with Chinese casualties at duties
  • will learn basic to medical terminology in Cantonese
  • future plans: speak Mandarin as well!
