That's right, I make money if you buy books on my site! But ONLY if you order directly from my links - going back later, or taking a 'detour' to write a review, doesn't count. I'm not holding my breath to make a fortune, but it is fun to read and review books for the store. Click on the books to read more about them or, if you like what you see, to order.

Culture, Health and Illness:
An Introduction for Health Professionals
A work of Medical Anthropology, it is a general text peppered with ethnographic examples. Extremely interesting, yet very easy to read, it was one of the major sources for my paper Power Relations in the Biomedicalised Birth Process.
The book is particularly useful for anyone who has to work in the health care sector, especially if they work directly with large numbers of people. Don't fool yourself into thinking that an anthropological approach is only for those working in a remote village. Anthropology is about culture, and you will find culture wherever you find human society. The book allows one to understand many aspects of our clinical and medical systems.
South African-born Helman, now in the United Kingdom, covers topics such as pain, nutrition and reproduction in the community and the clinical context, and is a must for those working in medical anthropology, nursing and primary health care - in fact anywhere in the field of medicine.
Give Me My Father's Body
The Life of Minik, the New York Eskimo
Those of you who know me know that I am extremely interested in the ethics of the study and display of human remains in museums. This book, which I found at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., tells a fascinating story.
Somehow I can identify with Adams as, from his position of relative ignorance, he is exposed to incredibly beautiful and incredibly sad experiences as he goes on his Last Chance to See these creatures. Nowhere does it say whether he took his towel.
His writing is, as usual, hilariously funny, but even while one laughs, one is confronted with the extremely ironic tragedy our world is facing.
Carwardine writes:
"For millions of years, on average, one species became extinct every century. But most of the extinctions since prehistoric times have occurred in the last three hundred years.
And most of the extinctions that have occurred in the last three hundred years have occurred in the last fifty.
And most of the extinctions that have occurred in the last fifty have occurred in the last ten.
It is the sheer rate of acceleration that is as terrifying as anything else. We are now heaving more than a thousand different species of animals and plants off the planet every year."
Most readers of this book will never have the chance to see the animals that Adams and Carwardine had the privilege of finding...
Latin American Spanish Phrasebook
It amazed me how many useful phrases and words were included in such a small, easy to carry book. And how spot on the compilers were! For my first visit and about two months of my living here, there wasn't a single word which I needed and could not find. Words typical to particular countries are included. In fact, I actually managed to teach myself a fair amount from this little book.
As well as the more usual type of words and phrases, it includes a number of useful sections, designed for handicapped travellers, travellers for small children, gay travellers, people looking for work, encounters with the police, and a great deal more. One thing I had to laugh at was the section entitled Dating and Romance. It includes such pertinent phrases as Por favor, no pare ("Please, don't stop") and Dame un beso ("Kiss me!") as well as a handy section called Afterwards with phrases like No puedes quedarte aqui esta noche ("You can't sleep here tonight").
