Marks and Spencer's summer 2000 Bronze collection Editor's Pick

Marks & Spencers Classic Cosmetics

The brand Marks and Spencer has that middle-class housewives image. Let's face it, their clothing and accessories aren't the most exciting, fashionable, or glamourous in the world. Indeed pop into their store and you can easily see the customers are exactly that, 40-ish housewives. But we checked out their Classics make-up line and we have to say it, we are impressed.

The packaging is still a bit blah, black and clear plastic, sometimes a touch of gold. Conservative and simple. It reminded us a little bit of the flagging Revlon actually. But Marks and Spencer has been trying hard to keep up with the cosmetic industry. It offers all the latest products churned out by their hip counterparts today. For example, want a light-reflective foundation for that dewy and glowing skin look? MAC launched one last month, but then, Marks and Spencer has it too. The shades are mostly warm-based, the surest sign it's with the new trends for 'real' looking skin (most make-up artists think warm-based shades suit the majority of of people). The selection seems fair, foundation also comes in an oil-free and a regular formula.

And if the light-reflective foundation isn't enough for you, smack on some shimmer potion, shimmer powder ($75), shimmery Lip Glaze lipgloss ($70), or shimmery cream Sheer Eyeshadow ($60, in a unique wand form). They also offer cream blushes ($65) in 6 natural wearable shades plus 2 shimmers (a bronze and a pink). While you won't find glitter in their line a la Urban Decay, shimmer is plentiful. For the natural girl, they still offer a large selection of matte eyeshadows, lipsticks, and blush.

Their new products also ventures out into more experimentational shades and packaging. Baby blue shimmery lipgloss. Stackable eyeshadows. It's all there. The affordable prices puts them in competition with drugstore lines like L'Oreal, Revlon, as well as Red Earth and Body Shop. But we challenge you to try to find more than 1 formula of liquid foundation at Red Earth, cream blushes or eyeshadows at Revlon or L'Oreal, and yellow-based foundation shades from Body Shop and L'Oreal. We think this line deserves a little more attention than it's been getting. Look into it, you may just find something you like. Our top picks: The light-reflective foundation and cream blushes in Toasted Spice and Dawson.
