THE HARD WAY

If you have ever had a problem that you had to work hard to overcome, then this prose is for you.

It is not be luck that I stand here today telling you what needs to be said. It took faith, tears, and a lot of guts.

Once, I was lost, feeling very alone; in need of a friend. But not knowing where to turn, through years of struggle, a helping hand once in a while, and the determination to change my life, I did.

Look at me; not through me, around me, or over me. Look at me; I am a person. I deserve to be recognized. I deserve respect. I will settle for nothing less.

Listen to me. Talk with me. Tell me what I do not know, not what I have already heard. Teach me what I need to learn, not what I already have learned.

I do not want special privileges, just the same opportunities that you have. I do not want sympathy, but understanding would be nice. I am not a token. I am an adult. I demand respect, dignity, and consideration; just as any adult.

Do not tell me who and what I am. Give me the freedom to discover for myself. Show me, assist me, but listen to me. We are not all alike and each of us must find out own way.

It is not be luck that I am here, a person. What I am, I became the hard way. You are welcome to celebrate with me, but not for me. This was my battle. It is my victory. It was won the hard way.
