The Magical World of Little Boys

Little boys live in a magical world full of whatever their imaginations can produce. One day they are pretending to be fathers; the next day they are cops, robbers, cowboys, Indians, truckers, or invaders from outerspace. No matter who they pretend to be, however, they always come home to Mom for a hug and reassurance that she still loves them---even dirty.

From cradle to manhood, little boys delight in trying to "scare" Mom. They befriend turtles, frogs, snakes, bugs, and other creatures better left in nature. Sometimes they do this openly, other times they are hidden away in the bluejean pockets or under the bed. Pity the worm that goes through the washer, or worse, the pet rat that escapes his box only find his way to the kitchen. In the world of little boys, windows seem to jump into the path of baseballs and footballs.

At four, the questions start. Where did I come from? Why am I a boy? Why is my aunt's tummy getting bigger? My son asked me one day if the reason he didn't have a sister was because he had been naughty or because he had the wrong mommy. He went so fare as to try to sell his little brother for a quarter in exchange for a little girl at the grocery store. How do you explain genetics and biology to a four-year-old?

A peaceful day has a way of ending in chaos. One boy can turn any place into bedlam within minutes. Multiply one boy by three, then divide by the number of minutes it takes for someone to think of an activity, and that is how long peace and quiet reign. When you add to three sons, several cousins, seven cub scouts, plus numerous friends; something unexpected is bound to happen. No one will admit to who started the water fight in the kitchen or who tried to teach the puppy how to swim in the wadding pool. It's time to grab cotton for the ears, coffee for the soul, and a smoke or candy. Now sit back and let kid powers take over. But the number one rule let them know that the mess they make, is the mess they clean up.

Little boys are confusing. They try to be the man of the house and the boss of those younger than themselves. Yet, at times, they want to be babied. Unfortunately for Mom, you don't always know when they are being the "man" or the "baby". As confusing as they are at times, they can also be amusing. Once, the two older ones decided to wade in mud puddle. Very carefully they removed their shoes and socks, placing them in a safe place. Then they proceeded to play. They came home, without their shoes, so mud covered that no one knows who they were.

While little boys try a mother's patience, they defy her logical order of life, escape her scope of understanding, even ignore her presence in hopes of being Daddy's shadow; they will always return for the reassurance and comfort that only her arms can provide. From cradle to grave, it is mom's cooking and shoulder they remember and long for. She does more to shape the future man than anyone or anything else in his life.

When day is done and all little boys are fast asleep, breathe a deep sigh of relief but don't forget that the chaos will begin anew tomorrow. Unfortunately, all too soon the day will come when the boy will go to sleep and in the morning a young man will awake. The door to the magical world will be closed till another little boy is born who will unlock that door and reopen it for you. Then you will look back in time and the chaos will seem like heaven.
