I wear on my right
ring finger a golden band with triangular setting which once held a rose
colored garnet. I purchased it while in Provincetown some years ago and
have worn it since as a symbol of my lesbian self. Shortly after having
made my profession of vows, I noticed the garnet missing from its setting.
I took the ring to a jeweler with hope of having the stone replaced. The
jeweler said the cost of having a stone cut to match the shape of the setting
would far exceed the value of the gold band. I opted to leave the setting
empty. The ring is now a new symbol for me. Its triangular setting reminds me that I am a lesbian (I don't think I'll ever forget that!) and the empty setting reminds me that I have chosen celibacy. I pray that the setting of my religious life may not be empty but rather open - a passage through which much love and life may flow. |
