Entries are listed geographically within 12 regions. Entries vary in size and scope. Only a few entries include detail. The longer entries occasionally relate stories about the goddess. Goddesses are indexed by name and attribute. The bibliography is substantial.

This scholarly work explores how women acquire their knowledge. The writing is based on interviews with women from diverse backgrounds, and creates five categories of how women know what they know. Generally, women approach life from the point of view of relationships and connectedness to people around them. The authors also talk about the process of obtaining their research: why they did the study and what parts of it surprised them.

Condren, Mary. The Serpent and the Goddess : Women, Religion, and Power in Celtic Ireland. Harper & Row, 1989.
Explores the interaction of the church and state in ancient Ireland and how the patriarchal structures evolved. Divided into three sections: the age of Eve, the age of Brigit, and the age of Mary, roughly corresponding to the pre-Christian, early Christian, and contemporary periods. Condren challenges the reader to envision a spirituality and world view that honors and empowers women, and reveres the earth.
