I've been to a lot of cathedrals, but not many of them have been Episcopal cathedrals. Since I'm an Episcopalian, this church holds a special place in my heart. My Catholic roommate was an easy sell. She also likes to visit every church we pass on the street. We also convinced a friend of ours to go with us.
We were halfway there when this friend asked why we were going to some church she'd never heard of. I didn't know what to tell her, so I related a story my aunt had told me. My aunt graduated from college in an age when cool kids--socially conscious kids--showed their disdain for The Man by boycotting graduation. However, she was in the choir, and graduation was being held at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, so she told her friends she was boycotting the ceremony, then donned her choir robe and marched off in mufti. (Her words, not mine.) It didn't matter that I couldn't explain. Once we got there, I no longer needed to.

This guy worked at the church where I grew up. | This was an art exhibit in one of the chapels. |
