René
François Ghislain Magritte (1898-1967)
was
a Belgian surrealist painter, born in
Lessines.
He studied at the Académie Royale
des
Beaux-Arts, Brussels. At that time
Magritte
had already begun
to
paint in the style, closely akin to
surrealism,
that was predominant
throughout
his long career.
He
is noted for works that contain the
placement
of ordinary objects alongside
the
extraordinary, or placed in unusual
contexts
that give new meaning to familiar
things.
This is frequently termed magic
realism.
Magritte was foremost among
exponents
of this style.
