Hey, I have a question for all.... Our last name, do you space it or not? I pretty much change my mind every time I change a job. I used to always put a space but that got confusing in college when the teachers would do a role call and would call out "Joy Putten" thinking my middle name was Vander. That happens a lot. My Uncle Gary has a whole collection of how absurdly our last name has been spelled on mail. I know my dad does it one way and my mom does it another. So, which is it? Just curious how you VP's do it.

I use Vander Putten, and laugh at people stumbling around trying to figure out how to file it. The US Army was an absolute gas! However, I do get a lot of lost records that way. In Holland, it is abbreviated vd Putten, with "Putten" being the important part. Cousin Peter did a lot of research in Holland, and I believe he found some variations there also. For an educated opinion, go to Elizabeth's (Betty Anne) website at: http://www.evanderputten.org/vp_namehistory.htm I think you might someday find your letter in that website, as Brian is on a "get it in writing" tear, and you have asked a very probing question. I also bet you don't get any two answers alike.

Definitely a space, it is so much fun to confuse all the computers that cannot figure that one out, plus this ways my initials can be MVP instead of MV.

My initials are RSVP

That's funny, mine are JSVP and my parents came SOO close to naming me something like Rebecca just so I would have RSVP as my initials. That must be neat. I know my older sister Christine just couldn't part with the name when she got married. Her husband's last name was "Rhodes" so they decided to combine the two and are now Vander Rhodes. I, on the other hand, am on a continuous search for a nice man with the last name "Smith". Ah, life would be so simple then.

Before I married I used the initials JVP. When I married, I dropped my middle name, Frances, and thus the letter F and substituted the V for my maiden name. Voila! I'm still JVP!

I wanted to hyphenate when I got married Vander Putten-Urbancik! Good for Christine

Actually, I think Vander Urbancik has a catchy ring to it, I like it! Although, phonetically it's a bit of a tongue twister with the "er ur" sound. How about, Vanderbancik?
