One day I asked her what it was, and could she teach me. She was happy to oblige me and produced a crochet hook and some yarn for me to use. I learned faster that she thought I would and she gave me a project—A pot holder.
I went from pot holders to winter hats for the Sisters to scarves to match! They were very impressed with my progress (except Sr. Mary Joseph- she said it made her dizzy to see me doing that so fast!). Then came the day we found that I had allergies , and a joint decision was made that I should leave. I still miss them all- 22 years later.
Now I have a small (very small) business. I crocheting things for people who don't know me from Adam. They all seem to be impressed with the speed at which I can get things done for them.
My business is called "Casey's Crafty Crochet Corner." I work at crocheting, on a good day, for at least 6 hours. I work on orders for other crafters, afghans for show sales, unique baby rattles, Christening gowns on order, stuffed animals, seasonal decorations, etc.
Most of my sales come from craft shows. I only do about 12 a year, so I have lots of business cards made up, so if my customers need something for a special occasion, they can call me.
I love it when someone asks me to surprise them. A while back an individual called and wanted something for a very sick child in the hospital where she worked. I asked the child's favorite color, which was purple. The person said those magic words "surprise me." I made a "One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater." Boy was she surprised!
Some time ago I sold some afghans to Lucia. She was so thrilled to find someone who did larger ones! She called me the next day with a proposition. Her crocheted bedspread was in need of repair and she was hoping I could fix it for her. I did and she paid me a lot more than I asked for! The next time that I saw her was at a, show. She was upset that I had no afghans for her to buy—it had only been a week!
So, you can see why I love to crochet. All the people I have met over the years, all the smiles, all the joy in the faces of the children when Mom or Dad buys a pocket teddy or a duck or whatever. These are the things that make me happy. The things that keep me going when I feel like giving up. Thank You, all, for helping me find my niche in this world.
