Addiction
Surprisingly, even in this day and age, many smokers have trouble with the idea that they are addicts. For many people, the label "addict" conjures up visions of winos passed out in the gutter.
I know now that perfectly decent, respectable people can be addicts. Addiction is not a sign of moral failure. It should be viewed as a disease some people are predisposed to, or a trap people fall into and then cannot escape without help. Acknowledging the truth is the beginning of recovery.

Dollars and Sense
Smoking is an expensive addiction. First, there is the cost of the cigarettes ...
The there is the time lost to smoking. Smokers pay ore for insurance, and are sick much more often. The on-the-job absenteeism rate for smokers is double that of non-smokers.

And then there is the physical damage -- burns and smoke stains in clothing, carpeting, and furniture. Some studies estimate the real cost of smoking a pack a day at over $2,000 a year (and rising).

Imagine how I would feel if my boss walked in and gave me a $2,000 a year raise? that's what I'm doing for myself by stopping smoking.

Feelings
"Your feelings are directly created by your thoughts." -- Dr. David Burns, Feeling Good.
If I think, "Stopping smoking is a rewarding adventure," I will feel excited and happy.
If I think, "Stopping smoking is a restriction and a loss," I will feel miserable and depressed.
If I think, "Who am I kidding? I can't do this," I will feel pessimistic and doomed.
If I think, "So far so good. I an do this as long as I want," I will feel optimistic and confident.

STRESS
Smokers often believe that smoking helps them cope with stress. This is an illusion.
Certain feelings or situations trigger desires to smoke (withdrawal). Stress is one of those feelings. So, when you feel stress, there are actually two separate sources of discomfort--the stress and the craving.
If you smoke, one of those sources is eliminated. The craving disappears for a few minutes, and all you are left with is the stress. You do feel better after the cigarette, but not because the stress has lessened. It's because the craving is temporarily gone. If you learn to separate these two distinct phenomena, you will quickly see that smoking doesn't help you cope with stress.
