    Welcome to BEIJING95-L!

BEIJING95-L (beijing95-l@majordomo.netcom.com) is a fully-moderated discussion list decicated to the promotion of the ideals & strategies promulgated at the United Nations Conference on Women, Beijing 1995 and dissemination of news & information concerning the international feminist movement(s).

Please visit the BEIJING95-L homepage: http://geocities.datacellar.net/Wellesley/8984/

    HISTORY OF BEIJING95-L, BEIJING95-WOMEN, & ABIGAILS-L

BEIJING95-L was launched on Sunday, January 22, 1995 as a women-only discussion of the UN Conference on Women. Because more and more subscription requests were being submitted by men, on Friday March 17 1995, the moderator of BEIJING95-L posted to the list a request for input on the subject of list membership. The vote was in favor of keeping the subscription-base for women-only with a significant percentage in favor of opening the membership to men. On Saturday March 25 1995, the moderator then submitted a request to her internet service provider (NETCOM) for the creation of a second, women-only discussion list BEIJING95-WOMEN, with the intent to open up BEIJING95-L to both women and men. At this time the moderator also requested the creation of digests formats be made available of both lists--this request was postponed indefinitely until NETCOM upgrades its Majordomo MLM software. On Thursday March 30, the moderator received confirmation of the creation of BEIJING95-WOMEN and opened up the subscription of BEIJING95-L to one & all.

From Jan 95 until Aug 95, BEIJING95-L continued to bring news about the preparation of the NGO/UN World Conference on Women. During this time BEIJING95-L was ported as a conference to APC/IGC Womensnet, Womens Wire, the San Francisco Bay Guardian BBS, and many other educational facilities Onlist & conference discussion(s) included: the language of the Platform of Action; the move of the NGO portion of the conference from Beijing to Huairou; difficulties with conference registration, visa, & hotel arrangements; the composition and exclusion of delegations from the Conference; the status of women in China; and international action alerts concerning women. BEIJING95-Lers also networked, discussed agendas, goals, & aspirations for the the Conference & beyond.

In late Aug 95 the moderator of BEIJING95-L & BEIJING-WOMEN, Jennifer Gagliardi joined Edie Farewell, Susan Mooney, and approximately 40 other women from the international network of Association of Progressive Communication to provide free onsite internet services to the participants of NGO/UN World Conference on Women. BEIJING95-L & BEIJING95-WOMEN posted continuous net-wided updates from the Conference sites.

Post-conference, BEIJING95-L & BEIJING95-WOMEN, has continued to carry information concerning the international status of women plus updates of post-Beijing activities & resources. In late Dec 95, BEIJING95-WOMEN was renamed ABIGAILS-L, in order to fcilitatea more general discussion concerning feminist direct action. BEIJNG95-L continues to be an email list dedicated to discussion & dissemination of information proceeding from NGO/UN World Conference on Women.

    GOALS OF BEIJING95-L

It is hoped that BEIJING95-L will provide a network for women and men wher we can exchange information concerning the NGO/UN World Conference on Women. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • ** Post-Conference events (regional meetings, etc.)
  • ** Prior U.N. Women's Conferences (Mexico City, Copenhagen, Nairobi)
  • ** Cross-postings from other electronic forums (i.e. email, USENET, WWW)
  • ** Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs) information
  • ** Caucuses
  • ** International formal & informal reports on the current status of women

The task of this forum is primarily the exchange of information. Please, however, honor copyright rules of information that you wish to post (a summary & source citation may be a better posting).

Although the origin of BEIJING95-L is the United States of America (more specifically: San Jose, CA) and the moderator in english-speaking, it is hoped that BEIJING95-L will transcend a northamerican-centric focus. Please feel free to post in English, Spanish, French, German, etc.

BEIJING95-L is not officially sponsored by the United Nations nor any organization--it is a labor of love born from the belief that the U.N. Conference on Women, Beijing 1995 will be a catalyst for women all over the world to lead humankind and creation into the 21st century! This list is also born from the frustration of the lack of media coverage of pre & post U.N. Women Conference events (and women's issues in general) plus difficulty accessing direct information about the conference itself. It is also hoped, that the information provided on this list will enable women & men work towards an just & equitable future for women, girls, and their menfolk. For information, input, or if you are having technical difficulties, please contact the list moderator, Jennifer Gagliardi, gagliajn@netcom.com.

    BEIJING95-L MODERATION & MONITORING

Finally, BEIJING95-L is a FULLY MODERATED LIST. This means that each posting is screened--not to censor information--but mostly to control traffic, to promote netiquette, and to discourage flaming. Although making 'net friends/contact is highly encouraged, please "chat" off-list. Occasionally a posting may be returned with suggestions concerning netiquette (very, very rarely, I hope!). Diversity of opinion is great--however attempting to post misogynitic material will result in immediate unsubscription plus a complaint registered with the offender's isp. Courtesy, accuracy of information exchanged, and having fun are paramount!
