Subject: dv/vaw & quilts (first in a series of posts exploring aspects of dv/vaw)
moderator FAVNET: october is national domestic
violence awareness month. during the month, i will
post a series of dv resources focusing on various
aspects of dv. here is the first post in the series:
quilts adressing dv/vaw/children
abuse/homphobia/slavery etc.
my current passion quilting. at every quilting
gathering, there is always reference to the group's
"charitable" activities. hey--this is not token
stuff--this is direct aid activism at it's finest!
these women not only are stiching up simple quilts,
they are making baby activity quilts, braille activity
quilts, quillos, duffle bags (many shelterees arrive
w/ their stuff in paper bags), jackets--the list is
endless!
alert: oct 15 the Flying Geese Quilt Guild will
raffle off a "Millennium Charm" quilt to benefit their
local dv shelter.

suggests the following essays:
Representing Mothers. This is a series of essays, two
of which deal specifically with African-Americans and
quilt themes. The first is byJean Chandler, "Three
Women: Alice Walker and Heritage". This essay explores
the quilt theme as it is used in both "Everyday Use"
and TheColor Purple. From here, you will need to use
your "Find" function (CTRL-F) and skip down to the
essay by Jody McNannay, "How to Makean American
Quilt". She explores how the imagery of quilts is used
for all of the characters including Anna.
