moderator FAVNET: october is domestic violence awareness month. however, it is now november and i still have some resource lists awaiting final touches before they can be posted.

"dv/vaw & school violence" is the twelth in a series of posts concerning different aspects of dv/vaw.

everyday we send our kids to school (and go to school ourselves) as if it were the most natural thing in the world. sometimes they (we) come home w/ more of an education for which anyone could ever bargain. no longer is school safety the purvue of crossguards, hall monitors, & yard duty moms--we're talking about metal detectors, cops, and full-blown anti-violence curriculums.

the merest hint of sexism within the school system is till quite problematic--think of test scores, title IX, "raising ophelia". add guns--the spectre of physical violence on the school campus--and people just *TILT*.

many will remember the montreal massacre (almost ten years ago to the day). when i was @ the un women's conf in beijing, i met one of the mother's of the montreal massacre. she said that she left the church the day of her daughter's funeral--the altar was filled w/ male clergy and not one of them addressed why her daughter & fella students were murdered in cold blood for the "crime" of being a feminist (aka a woman who thinks).

more recently there was jonesboro--most will remember how the media glossed over the gender issues. these issues were discussed in full on FAVNET, ABIGAILS-L, and other email lists. Irene Stuber also followed up the discussion in the 3/25/98 Catt's Claws and Trish Wilson published a *BRILLIANT* article entitled:

Call It What It Is: Femicide in Jonesboro
http://www.feminista.com/v1n12/femicide.html

the following is a list of anti-violence resources related to the school environment. the first section contains material related to the montreal massacre; the second, books related to violence in the school system, and the final section is a list of anti-violence internet resources.

soon this list & the others in the series will be posted @

Also available: The Montreal Massacre by Louise Malette (Editor), Marie Chalouh, Marlene Wildeman (Editor) (June 1991).

(exerpted from amazon.com) "'The Montreal Massacre' is a translation of essays, letters to editors, and poetry about the impact of the deaths of fourteen women engineering students, murdered by a gun-wielding man out to kill "feminists." In words both tender and scathing, its writers struggle to place the killings in their social context. Working to make the connections between personal grief and political action, the writings include a critique of the media, who for the most part reduced the tragedy to the isolated work of a "madman:" "If this is madness, never has it been so lucid...Never has madness left such a clear message."
