greetings from beijing!

i am starting this letter in my hotel room & hope to finish at the un site (beijing international convention center).

first of all, i would like to wish a early happy birthday to my mom, elinor hedwig haberle gagliardi , who will be 60 on saturday sept 16. if it weren't for the love & support of my mom & family, i wouldn't be here. please join me in wishing her a happy birthday, good health, lotsa love, and many great years to come!

secondly i mentioned the tons of literature stacked around the bicc--here is a sample list:

** fornightly review: chinese women in new era (chinese & english magazine) ** women's training in china (prc ministry of labor) ** the nairobi forward-looking strategies for the advancement of women (united nations) ** gender; poverty & employment: turning capabilities into entitlements (int'l labour office geneva) ** human rights: discrimination against women: the convention & the committe fact sheet 22 (united nations) ** putting gender on the agenda: a guide to participating in un world conferences (unifem & un/ngls) ** a women's development agenda for the 21st century: unifem's commitment to the world's women (unifem) ** world bank discussion papers #255: violence against women: the hidden health burden ** world bank discussion papers #202: making motherhood safe ** living & working: an illustration of the feminisation of poverty in europe (wide network women in development europe) ** the platform for action critical areas of concern (united nations) ** women on the move 1995/no. 9 (secretariat of unwcw) ** women: the pioneer front of democracy (antoinette fouque, des femmes press, 1995) ** the earthtimes newsaper (published daily) ** world women (published by china daily) ** sisters of the earth 1996 calendar (an absolutely gorgeous pocket calendar featuring famous women & grassroots women organiations published by FOKUS, Norway, fax +47 22209569--the publisher who was selling these calendars brought a whole box to the computer room to be distibuted to our women users. the publisher is absolutely dedicated to women networking & was very impressed by the info getting out)

somewhere in my stuff is a catalogue from the un on its unwcw publications. as i read through the material at home, i hope to post reports (greetings from san jose! ;-) . many publication were also available in spanish & french and also in german, italian, russian, arabic, scandanavian languages.

this morning i was able to confirm my airline tickets, pickup some great vegetarin food from ahisma (i am taking it home & hoping to convince my local health food store to carry it), and am doing a shift in the computer room. in several hours we will break down the computer room & hopefully get a bit more shopping done. this is probably my last post from china. i would like to thank all the BEIJING95 subscribers, the people of china, the fabulkous women of the apc tech staf, particularly edie, susan mooney, & spider for this once in a life time experience!

goodbye from beijing!
