Garden Notebook - Angelica

April 12, 1998
Both angelica plants have returned, one is significantly larger than the other, one gets more sun, and got an earlier start.

Yesterday I planted pansies infront of my angelica. Which I am expecting to get big this year. Hopefully it will flower. So Im planting fast growing stuff around it, where I expect later to become overgrown.

Note 6/28 - The stuff I planted nearby did not grow. 2 carrots came up, no lettuce and three rows away the scallions came up no problem. I will replant other stuff tomorrow The angelica seems to have a family of leaf hoppers. I'll have to read up on them.
Note 6/28 - The leaf hoppers moved on. Now there is a ton of them in the tree out front. And it looks like they are taking their toll.

Everything is doing great. The angelica has started blooming. The stem is as thick as my fist and it leans a bit toward the light. It grows in the center of my garden and is truely magnificant. A smaller one grows near by, not quite as tall or big. I'll have to find out what to do with it. Maybe I can use the seeds for something, looks like I'm going to have a bunch.

I've just noticed an aphid problem though. They seem to be well established on my angelica, and columbines, I've noticed a few out front in the garden too, on the nastursium. The lady at the farmers market suggested washing them off with water, she said they don't seem able to find their way back to the plant once removed. How do they find their way there in the first place? She said ladybugs are good too, I've already noticed at least two ladybugs on the angelica at one time already. Maybe I'll go get some more, I can buy a bunch in town.

Well, spraying the aphids off with water wasn't such a good Idea thus far. They are on the move, spreading out, going to other plants, as well as returning to the origal host plants. I turned 1500 ladybugs loose last night. Some of them started eating right away. This morning I saw several in various places, but no where near all of them, i hope they stick around and make themselves fat. I've noticed a few ladybug larva from ladybugs already in the garden. There was a cute little spider running around, pouncing on an aphid here and there, come all ye spiders and lady bugs and all others who feast upon thy aphids, the feast has already begun.
Later on I will rinse them off the other plants. I think next time I will try something different, insectacidal soap maybe. Darn bugs!!
