endometriosis

With endometriosis, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) is found outside the uterus. This tissue implants on other organs and/or surfaces in the pelvic cavity and in rare cases, outside the pelvic cavity to organs such as the lungs.

Endometriosis and its symptoms can vary widely. Some women may have no symptoms; others are disabled by the disease. Symptoms of endometriosis include, but are not limited to:

  • chronic pelvic pain
  • severe menstrual cramps
  • backache
  • bowel disorders
  • fatigue
  • infertility

A significant number of women with endometriosis have co-existing conditions. Research has revealed these conditions to have increased incidence among women with endometriosis:

  • thyroid disease
  • fibromyalgia
  • other autoimmune diseases

There is no known cause of endometriosis, and there is no known cure.
