BIRTH

Water trickles down my leg

It's time

Am I ready for this child?

Too late now

Do I have everything I need?

Run through the checklist

Should I call the midwife now?

Be patient

Should I call my husband?

Calm down

I'm scared about everything

You're not a child - fear is part of life.

The midwife is on her way

My compassion

My husband is coming home

My love

Contractions are coming faster

Relax and breathe

The house is clean and ready

The nesting is over

The children are asleep

They'll be awake soon

Am I really ready for this child?

Breathe In, Blow Out

I look in the mirror one last time

Memorizing my swollen form

Knowing the journey is about to end

And the living is going to begin

My body tells me I carry a girl

Will she be healthy and strong?

Will I be a good parent to her?

Who will she look like?

Can I give her everything she needs?

The midwife arrives

My husband dashes in

My mind goes numb as my body takes over.

My husband holds me

My midwife soothes me

My body wants the babe out

My mind has lost all control

Breathe In, Blow Out

I can't deal with the pain

Breathe In, Blow Out

I beg for no more babies

Breathe In, Blow Out

My husband laughs at that

Breathe In, Blow Out

I think "He may laugh now, but

Breathe In, Blow Out

just wait until I get off this bed"

Breathe In, Blow Out

My midwife says it's time to push

Breathe In, Blow Out, Push

Oh, the pain is overwhelming

Breathe In, Blow Out, Push

I feel her head pushing out

Breathe In, Blow Out, Push

Oh, the pain, the pain

Breathe In, Blow Out, Push

I feel the crown of my child's head

Breathe In, Blow Out, Push

Her head pushes out

Breathe In, Blow Out, Push

Next come her shoulders

Breathe In, Blow Out, Push

The pain, the pain, the pain

Scream

Her shoulders pass through

The rest of her body follows

I'm covered with sweat and blood

And all I want to do is hold her

Count her toes

Count her fingers

Count her eyes, arms, feet, legs

She's all there.

Oh, the miracle of life!
