Calm Comes To Miss Farmer, Awaiting Tests
HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 16 (UP)
The mental tempests which sent Frances Farmer into tantrums appeared stilled today as she rested quietly in the psychopathic ward of Los Angeles General Hospital.
"I feel that she knew she was ill, but did not have the courage to ask help," said Mrs. Ruth Farmer, sister-in-law of the 29-year-old actress, as she observed the period of calm.
Miss Farmer, transferred from county jail shortly after beginning a six-month sentence for violation of probation on a drunken-driving charge, will face a sanity hearing Wednesday.
Examining psychiatrists indicated that her mental turmoil may have stemmed in part from frustration in her acting career, and the collapse of her marriage with Leif Erickson, actor. It was recalled that after her arrest Miss Farmer had cried out: "Have you ever had a broken heart?"
The actress condition has been diagnosed by Dr. Thomas H. Leonard, Alhambra psychiatrist, as a "manic-depressive psychosis."
