Thanks for the website on Francis Farmer! I became curious to find out about her because of the song "Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle" (See I'm a big Nirvana fan) and I saw a bio on her on T.V.

The quote from frances' church that she pointed out to me on the wall of her church in the early to mid 60's was one of the three following bible verses: Matthew 16:26: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Mark 8:36: For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Luke 9:25: For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? Thank you for all your prayersand kind thoughts. May she rest in peace indeed.

Thanks to David K, Jason, Dario,Jeffrey K and George who all sent special messages for yesterday. I took your messages and cards to Oaklawn on Sunday morning. The weather was beautiful and the chapel was peaceful and quiet. I took some photographs and will send them along to all when they are processed. We also left some flowers....it is a beautiful resting place...peaceful and very full of nature. David has some photos of the crypt on the site...take a look if you have never seen it. Rest in peace, Frances Elena Farmer. JR

Thinking about Frances today, the anniversary of her death. Frances' story will continue to affect human lives, as long as it is told. We would benefit from having someone like Frances alive today, and she would be treated with more attention and respec than she was during her lifetime. I have drawn more strength from her life than anyone else's, and it has helped me be a stronger woman. I would have loved to be in Indianapolis today to visit Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, but I hope that my thoughts and ffections are felt by her today and every day.

I’d like to say something regarding Frances’ lobotomy. I totally agree with Mr. Fritzsche. Dr. Freeman’s son has nothing to gain by making that "she was lobotomized" statement. Ok, she seemed to function pretty well (anger included) in her (dull) post-Ste lacoom years, but don’t you think she WAS actually different? She clamorously lacked all the passion she’d had before! Ok, she might have been disillusioned and hurt, but that does not justify the entire frame of her life, which seems to have been led by wo completely different women. I’m sure the former would have never approved the latter, she was far too passionate and honest. I believe it’s far too simplistic to say her brain was still intact just because she could be interviewed and could run cheap t lk shows. In my humble opinion, the post-Steilacoom Frances could very well be another person. Rest in peace Frances, Dario.

Today is August 1,1999, the 29th anniversary of Frances' death. I am going out to Oaklawn on this beautiful sunlit morning with the messages that you have sent me. We have a few flowers and the thoughts of all of you with us. Thanks everyone who emailed messages. Jeanira Ratcliffe said she was at the hospital that day...Frances told her to go home and feed the cats...while Jean was at home, the phone rang, and she knew. One of Frances' favorite Bible passages was "What good does it do a man to gain the world if he loses his soul?" [Matthew 16:26] It is written on the wall of her church in Indianapolis St Joan Of Arc. One Sunday she pointed it out to her nephew when he w s visiting her. Think of her today.... JackRandall

Just watched ' Mysteries and Scandals'. Dr. Walter Freeman's son insists that Frances Farmer had a prefrontal lobotomy and he points to a picture showing his late father performing this procedure on her. Whom are we suppose to believe what really happened if not Dr. Freeman's son, who would have had ( legally ) access to his father's confidential medical records ?! To the question: Can one judge by a person's outward behavior, whether he or she had undergone a lobotomy, I like to quote from a 1956 paper by Dr. Freeman:....'High-level performance is possible after prefrontal lobotomy. This is indicated by the competence of lobotomized patients in such professional fields as medicine, law, teaching, nursing. One patient is a member of a first-rate symphony orchestra; another is funtioning well as a missionary in the Far East; a psychiatrist was promoted to chief of service in a large mental hospital; a fourth is confidential secretary in a sensitive spot in the Federal Government.'

Like many others, I came to know her through "frances" starring jessica lang. I watched this movie countless times, and I still enjoy watching it every now and then. It took some time before I felt I need to know how much of it is in the true spirit of that woman, and how much was a myth created by the industry she has so much despised. After reading "Shadowland" and her so called autobiography, and watching a couple of her movies, her legacy stands as strong and vibrating for me as it did before exploring for a truth behing the image. wasn't she just wonderfull?

I want to thank George Snow for his "rock opera" in Frances Farmer my hero,I have a tape sent to me by Jack.I liked the poems and the spoken words most of all.The music?.....Well?I love the idea. The poems are read with beauty but the music buries it into a mass of unclearity.Maybe thats the look they wanted.I would like to say these words,Ther was a tremendous power in the burning look of her eyes;she came "conquering and to conquer"she seemed pr ud and occasionally even arrogant.I do know that she badly wanted to and that sometimes she was kind.everything was in chaos,in a state of agitation and restlessness. Perhaps the demands she made upon herself were too severe and she was unable to find in herself the necessary strenght to satisfy them. ------Dostoevsky

(Cont'd from previous post) One more thing: I see no reason to question the veracity of her mother's comments regarding Frances's behavior, or her mother's sincere concern. While Frances was clearly treated terribly in the hospital, based on behavior at t e court, as well as her mother's comments she appears to have been a very troubled and disturbed person who perhaps really did need "help" according to her mother's best opinion & judgment. (That's not to say that she found any real help in the hospital.) br>

I posted a message a few weeks ago also. As my previous message says, I've read none of the books and seen none of the movies so what I know is limited to what this site offers (which has helped a lot) as well as the very misleading NY Times article at ti e of her demise which strongly implied she had had a lobotomy. The falsity of that report should be easy to prove beyond any doubt whatever, by interviews with those who remember her from the post-hospital years. Also, I want to add that I think anyone d ing serious research about FF ought to speak to any surviving people at the Joan of Arc Catholic Church for their reminiscences, including clergy who might have been there at that time. There must be many such people. Her religious conversion would be an xtremely significant facet of her life which would be the key to the rest of her life & personna, really. (Note: I am not a Roman Catholic, I am an Orthodox Christian.) Another question which interests me: when did she became a Catholic, and what confirma ion name did she receive? That is, was her patron saint one of those named Francis, or was it Helen (her middle name, Elena, being a variation of Helen)?

I say unashamedly that I love Frances Farmer. She's not a goddess, but an truly lovely person, both in appearance and I think in soul. She was lovable and beautiful and sweet person. I believe she is one our great people, considering her struggle, her kindness, her faith etc.. The best part is: I think the story has a happy ending. I think she is with our Lord in heaven. Her end was only a beginning. I hope to see her in heaven if I get there. All you lovers of Frances Elena, I love you all too and God bless you all!

Sam - the article you refer to is an editorial by John Rosenfield in what I assume must have been an LA newspaper at the time of FF's first incarceration. Some of the other details you mention probably came from William Arnold's account in 'Shadowland.' Here is the text of the editorial as reproduced in 'Will There Really Be A Morning." WHAT HAPPENED TO FRANCES FARMER SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED AT ALL Just when the movie industry is winning the public's attitude and admiration, Hollywood breaks out in a rash of petty scandals. It is not a tribute to a part of the press that some of these episodes hae been played well beyond their merits of news. It was the lesser part of sagacity that the industry permitted some of these affairs to get out of hand. The Frances Farmer incident should never have happened. This unusually gifted actress was no threat against law and order orthe public safety. Some hing that began as merely a traffic reprimand grew into a case of personal violence, a serious chargeand a jail sentence. And all because a sensitive, high-strung girl was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Fortunately, the law came to its senses in time to spare Miss Farmer the ignominy of prison. Miss Farmer, who is no prodigy of emotional stability or sound business management, needed a lawyer one unhappy night last winter. A helping hand might have extradited her immediately from nothing more than traffic violation. The terrible truth isthat s e stood alone, and lost.

Thank you so much for this wonderful site on such a talented women. I have been a fan of Frances'ever since I read her autobiography when I was 13 years old. This was just before the movie starring Jessica Lange came out. I was dissapointed in the movi , feeling that Frances was portrayed as a simpering, almost weak woman. Although I admire Lange, I feel that she is far too feminine and passive to be able to pull off such a magnatic and forceful character as Frances. The moral behind the film seemed t be that if Frances would have just accepted a man in her life, she would have been just fine. Those of us that admire Frances realize that she was really terribly alone, and alianated by the social norms of the 30s and 40s. Growing up outside Indianapo is, I have taken much joy in exploring many of the places where Frances lived and worked. It is so great to have a site that is as obsessive as i am in researching her life. I really appreciate the pictures of her home in Seattle. It is a place I have lways been determined to viset. I can't believe that there are others out there who share my interest in Frances so completely. Once again, thank you for the wonderful site!

well what should i say that hasnt been said before? if it wernt 4 kurt cobain i would never have possibly heard of frances farmer.. her life was sad..tradgic... but she gave us all something.. survival thats what she was all about i feel being herself and not playing by other peoples words is what was another great feature about her.. like so many other fallen angels she made changes that many would be classified as wrong ..but which would later be recognised as symbolic.. yet frances was misunderstood and perhaps still is... I only hope that her memory and talent serve in our minds as what wrong doing society and hollywood is like.. another tortured person burns away... but the memory of a fine liberated woman speeks out... and continues to stay well known in the sympathetic ears of myself.... as she said ...there is no victory in survival only grief... love and empathy...tash... p.s i hope frances gets her revenge on seattle...

I have never seen movie with Frances in it, but I am in the middle of reading her autobiography...which is so shocking and sad of what she went through and how her mother treated her-no wonder she was so high-spirited! I saw the movie "Frances" starring essica Lange and that led me to read Frances' autobiography. I have never seen any pictures of Frances (just what is on the back of the book) but when I went into this site.....I never realized how beautiful she was and the torture she had to endure in t e asylum! for what...for being ahead of her time and not playing any of the games hollywood expected of her! She only went into movies to make money...her real love was of the stage! I would like to see A&E Biographies do a story on her. She was a fas inating women and very sad she died at 57---so young. Thanx for the chance to comment on Frances Farmer! The pictures you have of her are very beautiful!

Life is beautiful when it is lived with a passion. I serched for who Frances Farmer was after i heard that Nirvana song. I was a curious, investigative 13, or so, year old girl. Why does she have a reason for revenge. After a while i found the film, s w it, and loved Jessica Lange's portral of Frances. So now i'm just looking with my wandering eyes for more passion,I suppose. The rebellion is inspiring. If Fraces Farmer was really crazy, when she didn't substitue herself willingly, than so am i.

I'm sorry I haven't seen any of her movies. I do love, Frances, the movie, however. One of the reasons, I believe, why I never watched any of Frances's movies is because I'm not sure she liked Hollywood very much. About Frances, he movie, I do not take it as 100% true. But I want to believe that Jessica Lange did a tremendous job portraying the demons the real Frances endured in life. I'd been looking for information about Frances Farmer for years. I'm glad I found your web site. Thank you for the i formation.

My mother was diagnosed manic depressive before lithium was invented. She was institutionalized 15 time from age 48 to 55. By 1972, lithium became available and changed her life completely. She became no different a personality, but she did not have the u controlled rages and highs. Frances Farmer suffered like Vivien Leigh and there was no help for them. In earlier days, mental illness was a stigma because it could not be treated. Mentally ill people who did what today would get a slap on the wrist, if ev r cited in court, were locked away. Fortunately we kept my mother out of the public eye until we could not but commit her as she would climb out of windows, thinking the Queen of England was waiting for her on the front lawn. When she looked back on her l fe, she remembered every bizarre thing, but said it seemed so real. She was so thankful that lithium was finally available to her and lived until l997 when she died from Parkinson's in her 80's. During her final illness, she was back only on a small dose f an anti-psychotic to keep her calm, and she was brave and practical until the end. Our brain chemistry is integral to our personality...abuse it or not treat it and it will get out of control and kill you. If you have a mental illness, get treatment. I s that...illness not a stigma from the 30s-60s attitude. I resent Kurt Kobain, or any of those punks who drug themselves up using victims of mental illness to further their careers. He could not even control himself...at least Frances Farmer tried despara ely in a time of no healing available to her to fight for the right things in life.

The site is great. Here I thought I was relatively alone as a Frances Farmer fan, and now I learn there are dozens and probably hundreds of us out there. The diversity in views on the favorite Frances movie is interesting. I totaled the votes at this poin (4/18/99). Here they are: 1. COME AND GET IT- 15 2. SOUTH OF PAGO PAGO- 5 3. SON OF FURY- 4 3. TOAST OF NEW YORK- 4 5. AMONG THE LIVING- 3 6. EXCLUSIVE- 2 6. EBB TIDE- 2 8. THE PARTY CRASHERS- 1 Of course, the above may largely reflect movie availability, but COME AND GET IT is widely thought to be her best film. More later.

In this day and age of actors all looking and behaving like sorority house, boring, conformists I find myself always drawn back to this site.At 28 years old I am sick of the movies and whats on TV.trying to shape our minds, whats supose to be funny is far fr m it and the mindless chatter makes me think of Frances in the nut house surounded by constant noise. All and all people can chose to stop the bull.I wish I had answers to the saga of Frances Farmer, but I do know this, some people are just uncomfortable wit life in general and it causes them to act in ways that are veiwed by others as sick and they can become vindictive in the plot to ruin you.It was like the time I made a journey to Salem mass,to find any trace of my ancester,Susanha North Martin, who was h ng,in Salem.I did not find much but as I was getting fed up,I visited the peabody museum and there I found her court trandscipts on view and I poured over them,I learned that she was not backing down and thought the court stupied in its questions.I also l arned that she was a woman of style and a sense of humour. One of her accusers said"How did you walk through the storm and come my house perfectly dry?"She responded simply "Is it my fault, you can not keep your head out of the rain"This brought forth laugh er from the court. In salem there is a monument to all those that got hung and there last words,Suzahna said"Amen,Amen,A FALSE TOUGUE WILL NEVER MAKE A GUILTY PERSON".So you see it started a long time ago and saddly its still going on the killing of spirit and self, when they can not control you they will break you one way or another.

Many, many years ago, while looking through a copy of Hollywood Babylon, I discovered Frances. The photos were very disturbing and my heart went out to her. I have tried over the years to find out as much as possible about her, but there seems to be limit d resources regarding her. About 5 years ago, someone casually mentioned to me that she had written a book, (Will There Really Be A Morning), which I promptly tracked down and devoured. Of course I had seen "Frances", (starring my favorite actress Jessica Lange, who had also starred in "Sweet Dreams", the Patsy Cline story, another tragic life), and was floored by the cruelty that this sensitive and beautiful woman was subject to. With more research I have come to realize that the book was written by someo e who made up quite a bit of it, (it was published after Frances' death), and that the movie has some major discrepancies. Such as the fact that Frances was never lobotomized. Just by virtue of the fact that she hosted a live television show 6 days a week for many years is testament that she functioned normally. I sincerely doubt that a TV station would risk air time to a zombie, which is what one became in the lobotomies of those days. At any rate, my sincere wish is for an accurate book to be published a out her. I've noticed that a lot of people have become aware of Frances because of Nirvana, which is fine with me. Whatever it takes! Kurt C. obviously related to Frances. She was ahead of her time and was greatly misunderstood and disliked for speaking her mind, lthough I think Kurt never had his civil rights violated like she did, so exactly how he relates is a mystery to me. Sorry for babbling on, but so very few people I meet have ever even heard of Frances and it's nice to spew my thoughts about her to someon who might give a damn! May Frances live on in our hearts. CJC.

Frances from 1982 is the best movie I have ever seen. I am a Swedish mental patient how also may be forced to undergo a lobotomy. I refuse to obey my father when he calls for psykiatry and I refuse to take any toxic medication, so I am forced depot inject ons, The first time I was forced by the state was when I was 13 years old to undergo surgery because of a birth mark that they claimed could cause cancer, I also have been forced to undergo conscription, I have been forced to mental institutions three tim in my life and never had any help from my lawyer to appeal, my last lawyer Bengt Sjonander never even sent a copy of the verdict so when I found out they had already delivered a verdict it was too late to appeal. I was beaten by my father when I was youn and may have been sexually abused when I was sleeping when I was a kid. Frances Farmer was sexually abused by her father and had a fake attourney too, just like me. But if I claimed my attourney was fake I would only be called paranoid, and if I died fro the painful sideeffects from the nevroleptics It would say suicide or died from his mental illness in the journal. I am writing from the University of Skovde in Sweden, March 17, 1999 My adress is: Adam Sjodén Henriksbergsgatan 38 54135 SKOVDE I am also a Vegan, like Jenny Garth is

As a kid, seeing a copy of Hollywood Babylon and then seeing Jessica Lange portray Frances Farmer, I became fascinated. I'd spend hours and the local library trying to find anything I could; newpaper articles, magazine features, anything. Since then I'v developed a mild fixation on gathering as much memorabilia as I can. From a personal stand point, I think that she was a very sensitive and highly intelligent woman in an age and a business where that was not desired. Perhaps she was too fragile to handle the pressure of her convictions over the pressure of her family lif and was pushed to make unfortunate judgement calls. Whatever the case may be, she is still one of the most intriguing actresses I've ever read about and unfortunately seen so little of. Long live Frances Farmer!

David - a great one-stop memorial to a fine actress. George, I have your tape and it is great I would suggest everyone get a copy. I remember Frances and knew her as a television personality when I was growing up. I knew nothing of her film career until after she was off the air. Her 'autobiography' was written after her death by Jeanira Ratcliffe. William Arnold in 'Shadowland' explored some interesting areas, but I am not convinced that Frances had a lobotomy. She did a live television program six days a week. She was not a 'zombie' as she has been described. Her uncle who was a doctor kept track of her treatment in the various institutions she was in and probably kept her from suffering this final insult..though she was definitely used for experimentation of drugs and treatments. See her movies and marvel at Jessica Lange's portrayal...she was very good...but there is much more to the story. She was a survivor most of all. David, thank for giving us a forum and an opportunity to share memories and opinions about a woman who is controversial even 29 years after her death. JRE

I cant blame the ones that stumble across this tribute to Frances only becaus Kurt cobain mentioned her when he was alive. But to be honest they have missed the whole point. If he had been really listening to Frances's message from her book he would have re lized that no matter how horrific life becomes life is still worth living it all we got as human beings. That maybe things can change and get better.Frances said in her book during the most agonizing years she never once thought of suicide. You got to give er that.Frances was too alive to think such things.Even after the 8 years of torment in a public asylum she wanted to have a life and worked hard to piece herself back together when realesed.Besides she would have never liked Cobains music and would have een disgusted by that song he sang about her.I have heard it and read the lyrics,it still does not make sense regarding her.DO NOT MUTILATE HER NAME ONLY BECAUS COBAIN DID.SHE HAD IT ALL OVER THAT SCREAMING FOOL THAT CHICKENED OUT OF LIFE.ANOTHER THING I M SICK OF THESE HALF ERECT ROCK STARS COMPLAINING HOW HARD THEY GOT IT WHEN THEY SAY OH I AM BITTER RICH AND F_CKED OVER POOR BABIES,THEY DONT KNOW WHAT SUFFERING IS.LIVE FRANCES FARMERS LIFE.

Ido want to know if anyone could tell me how to get a hold of the movie "Will There Really Be A Morning" starring Susan Blakley as Frances Farmer? Also I know Frances once did a remdi ion of little women was this on broadway or a movie? and if it was a movie did she use a different last name for I found one movie that was an old version of "Little Women" but it said Frances Dee I was a little confused and curious. Do you know where I c uld pick any Frances Movies Even for rent? I live in Stratford Ontario and we semm pretty limited I've looked everywhere Thanks

Frances Farmer was born on sept 19 1914. you have 1913 and it's the first thing you see on the page you think you would at least get that right! seeing that as your first mistake so not going to make anyone go further into this sight.

I want to thank all the contrbutors, well done gentelmen.I wanted to leave a poem for frances it goes as such.I think of your trials and broken dreams and your face that I search for,I look for the faintest glimmer of the old fire.It shows at times when yo r heart is not heavy and a clear day belongs to you.All that can be wished for is an untroubled mind and a day spent by the sea.To be in the middle of summer forever. To sit and listen to the sea and a stray ghost. Then when it scares us,we grab our shoes a d run up the boardwalk with a full moon overhead.Laughing at our own fear.So as the grandest open air hotels,by the sea fall into neglect and ruin I weep for the echos of those splendid days. When life was still new,and clean, sigh. We all were just getting o our feet. I just became a GIGANTIC Nirvana fan a few months ago. It's pretty ironic, I mean, 5 years after Kurt's death, I'm just now listening to them. I was only 7 when Nevermind came out, so, as you can see, I was born too late to really get to experience the ph enomenon that was Nirvana. But, that's enough babbling on... R.I.P. Frances Farmer R.I.P. Kurt Cobain Oh well, whatever, nevermind. Sincerely, Allison PS- Serve the servants.

I am very sad by the sudden interest in frances farmer after the years of not giving a shit about someones life while they still live.we now have a way to keep dragging her into the very expliotaion she never wanted. The fist picturs I ever saw of her were found in a dusty bookstore ten years ago.In this day of instant gratification people have to remember that she was only human not some god that to this day is blow up into mythic propotions. She is respted becaus she was ahead of her time.WE as a society n ed her spirit, today. We also need to find our own peace, thats all Fances wanted she said it best.Francis is at all of our hearts and I under stand the fustration fitting it all together.Has the hate in the world really changed? We still do what they did fra ces its just now enough that no one cares.TODAY.

I was absolutely apalled after seeing the movie Frances, not only after having seen how brutally she had been treated in a society that ultimately wanted her destroyed, but especially after reading the very informative little message that the Department of ealth delivers to us after all the credits are mentioned, reassuring us that surgical proceedures of the kind Frances underwent(as shown in the movie) are of a much more hygenic standard today. So not to worry! Books on Frances,or by Frances, are very difficult to come by.However,I have succeeded in finding Shadowland, amongst others, on the Internet-so it can be done! I am also a great fan of Jessica Lange. Her performance as Frances is probably one of the strongest and best performances I've seen on screen(cinema or T.V). And I love this website, had been wondering why there wasn't one especially made for Frances,I guess I was just a little slow at finding it!

Frances Farmer lived about a block away from me on Park ave. in Inpls. in a really unique "cottage house". After seeing "Frances" I have such an interest in her. (Because I'm a non-conformist myself). I used to be her paperboy and remember collecting from her as well as halloween visits. The house was really small and had a makeup mirror and a nice white (bear?) rug in the living room. There were a few episodes of some trouble over there sometimes (police, etc.) God bless that woman. I can't watch the movie again. It's too painfull.

Thank you for having a site dedicated to Frances Farmer. I've been interested in her since I read Shadowland in 1995. I don't think that I've ever felt so much outrage and frustration after reading a biography. (...) In these times of cyclical and ferocious repressive gushes, Frances Farmer represents a warning that cannot be ignored. Today, Seattle is one of the most open, cultured and tolerant American cities, but the Seattle which destroyed Frances Farmer is a state of mind that keeps on destroying and, those who are obsessed by Frances and feel her screaming inside of them, - and i cannot be otherwise after having sensed her intimate greatness - will always be waiting for her "comeback as fire" to have her revenge on Seattle. On hers and on all our personal Seattles, big or small, but nevertheless extremely painful. - Dario - from my introduction (in Italian) to my Italian translation of "Shadowland".
