HOLLYWOOD, CALIF., January 15 – (UP)
A complaint was filed in Superior Court today asking a hearing to determine the sanity of Frances Farmer, blond screen actress jailed yesterday after a 24-hour spree.
Dr. Thomas Leonard, a psychiatrist, filed the complaint, and Miss Farmer was ordered removed immediately to General Hospital pending a hearing next Wednesday.
It was reported the actress’ father, Ernest Farmer of Seattle, was flying here to seek her release into his custody.
The actress’ sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Farmer, present when the complaint was filed, refused to talk to reporters, saying: "All I want to do is get out of here."
Miss Farmer received several telegrams from friends today, one of them from Virginia Gilmore, actress, which said:
"I have met you only once but I liked you so I am sending my sympathies and understanding."
Miss Farmer spent a quiet night in her cell, drank a cup of jail coffee which she eyes with distinct disdain and said:
"Well, where are the instruments? When are you going to start the torture? I thought you would brand me with a hot iron."
Matron Vada Sullivan said the actress slept as though she were completely exhausted after she went to bed at 11 p.m.
Mrs. Sullivan said Miss Farmer would not be put to work in the jail because she is in a high-strung condition and requires rest.
