Frances Farmer, U. W. Girl, Gets Ingenue Lead In Movies

HOLLYWOOD, Friday, Jan. 10

The "back door" to the studios brought two new aspirants to the screen today.

They are Frances Farmer, pretty University of Washington girl, and Bill Alston of Pelican, La.

Each has been here several months, in, but not of, the picture business. Miss Farmer’s sole work had been as a foil for other players, taking screen tests. Alston had been under contract, but was told he could not become an actor because of his heavy southern accent.

Ready to Quit, Gets ‘Break’

Finally, when she was all ready to leave the studios and try her luck on the stage, Miss Farmer came to the attention of a director while she was "feeding" dialogue to another aspirant in a test. She was given the ingenue lead in "Too Many Parents."

Alston’s contract has been renewed – not as an actor, but as a dialogue coach.

He’s teaching the cast of "The Green Pastures" to speak with an authentic southern accent!
